The Truth About Ballistic Coefficients [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
The ballistic coefficient of a bullet describes how it slows in flight due to air resistance. This article presents experimental determinations of ballistic coefficients showing that the majority of bullets tested have their previously published ballistic coefficients exaggerated from 5-25% by the bullet manufacturers.

Influence of point defect concentration on the generalized stacking‐fault energy in uranium dioxide

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, EarlyView.
Abstract Stacking‐fault energy is a fundamental material property that significantly affects the shearability of crystalline materials by influencing the behavior of dislocations. Here, the impact of point defects on the stacking‐fault energy in UO2$\text{UO}_2$ nuclear fuel is investigated using a large‐set of molecular statics simulations combined to

Influential Information Supply or Just a Modern Pillory? Investor Perceptions of the CEO Pay Ratio Disclosure Rule

open access: yesJournal of Business Finance &Accounting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We investigate investor perceptions of the US CEO pay ratio disclosure rule by studying market reactions to its implementation. Our findings reveal an overall negative market reaction, suggesting that investors anticipated the disclosure rule to be detrimental on average across firms.

Sleep neuroimaging: Review and future directions

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
Summary Sleep research has evolved considerably since the first sleep electroencephalography recordings in the 1930s and the discovery of well‐distinguishable sleep stages in the 1950s. While electrophysiological recordings have been used to describe the sleeping brain in much detail, since the 1990s neuroimaging techniques have been applied to uncover

The impact force in the ballistic oscillator [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
We determine the impact force generated by the projectile penetrating the body of the harmonic oscillator. We discuss the ballistic effect in connection with the Compton effect. Key words: Mathematical pendulum, physical pendulum, ballistic pendulum, harmonic oscillator.

Antinomies of Alignment Redux: The United Arab Emirates and the United States

open access: yesMiddle East Policy, EarlyView.
Abstract Over the past three decades, the United Arab Emirates has forged a sturdy bilateral security alignment with the United States. It has also pursued foreign policies that conflict with US interests in the Gulf and the broader Middle East. This contradiction is usually attributed to a hedging strategy.

The orbit of the Chelyabinsk event impactor as reconstructed from amateur and public footage [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
A ballistic reconstruction of a meteoroid orbit can be made if enough information is available about its trajectory inside the atmosphere. A few methods have been devised in the past and used in several cases to trace back the origin of small impactors.

Enhancing safety feedback to the design of small, unmanned aircraft by joint assessment of impact area and human fatality

open access: yesRisk Analysis, EarlyView.
Abstract Advantages of commercial UAS‐based services come with the disadvantage of posing third party risk (TPR) to overflown population on the ground. Especially challenging is that the imposed level of ground TPR tends to increase linearly with the density of potential customers of UAS services.
