Ellipses Percolation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Physics, 2017
We define a continuum percolation model that provides a collection of random ellipses on the plane and study the behavior of the covered set and the vacant set, the one obtained by removing all ellipses. Our model generalizes a construction that appears implicitly in the Poisson cylinder model of Tykesson and Windisch.

Ellipses, near ellipses, and harmonic Möbius transformations [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 2005
It is shown that an analytic function taking circles to ellipses must be a Möbius transformation. It then follows that a harmonic mapping taking circles to ellipses is a harmonic Möbius transformation.

Perimeter of an Ellipse [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1920
THE following approximate formula for finding the perimeter of a fairly flat ellipse may be found practically useful. Suppose a = 1, then the length of a quadrant of the ellipse is nearly where a is the major, and b the minor, axis. The formula works best from about b = 0·2 to b = 0·5, after which the formula of Boussinesq is more accurate, viz.

Interpolation of the MacAdam Ellipses [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, 2018
This paper is an attempt to provide a rigorous basis to the interpolation of the MacAdam ellipses. It starts by defining criteria used to compare the different possible interpolations. Then several interpolation strategies are compared. The main conclusion that arises from this comparison is that the ellipses should not be interpolated based on the ...

On the motion of billiards in ellipses [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mathematics, 2022
AbstractFor billiards in an ellipse e with an ellipse as caustic, there exist canonical coordinates on e such that the billiard transformation from vertex to vertex is equivalent to a shift of coordinates. A kinematic analysis of billiard motions offers a new approach to canonical parametrizations of billiards and associated Poncelet grids.
