On the rotation of elliptical galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1978
The tensor virial theorem is applied to models of early-type galaxies. First the theorem is applied to rotating elliptical galaxies whose constant-density surfaces are similar ellipsoids. A relationship is obtained between the observed rotations and the forms of generally triaxial galaxies.

Compact Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
We summarize our present knowledge on low-mass high-surface brightness elliptical objects near massive galaxies that are often called M32-type or compact elliptical galaxies. The origin of the low mass of these objects is a controversial matter: is it intrinsic to their formation or produced, as classically believed, by tidal stripping from the massive

The Relationship between Slope and Luminosity [PDF]

open access: yesKirkuk Journal of Science, 2010
In this study, a sample of galaxies has been adopted. It consists of 112 elliptical galaxies, among them were 56 dwarf elliptical galaxies, which belong to virgo cluster, 37 normal galaxies and 19 bright galaxies. Also, surface brightness profiles fitted

Deviations of the Surface Brightness Distribution in Isolated Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesمجلة التربية والعلم, 2012
In this paper, we present the surface brightness profiles of 48 isolated elliptical galaxies. we have adopted the r1/n – law to the observed surface brightness profiles of the adopted sample of isolated elliptical galaxies for the intermediate radial ...

Planetary Nebulae and the Ionization of the Interstellar Medium in Galaxies

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
We discuss the role of planetary nebulae and their progeny in galaxy context in terms of ionization of the galaxy interstellar medium. This regards ionized gas outside the disk of spiral galaxies, the diffuse ionized medium in spiral galaxies, and the ...

The Fate of the Interstellar Medium in Early-type Galaxies. II. Observational Evidence for Morphological Quenching

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The mechanism by which galaxies stop forming stars and get rid of their interstellar medium (ISM) remains elusive. Here, we study a sample of more than 2000 elliptical galaxies in which dust emission has been detected.

Why there are no elliptical galaxies more flattened than E7: Thirty years later [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2006
Elliptical galaxies are modeled as homeoidally striated Jacobi ellipsoids (Caimmi and Marmo 2005) where the peculiar velocity distribution is anisotropic, or equivalently as their adjoint configurations i.e.

The orientation of elliptical galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 2010
We determine the orientations of the light distribution of individual elliptical galaxies by combining the profiles of photometric data from the literature with triaxial models. The orientation is given by a Bayesian probability distribution. The likelihood of obtaining the data from a model is a function of the parameters describing the intrinsic ...
