Chandra observation of the central galaxies in A1060 cluster of galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (

A Catalog of Photometric Redshift and the Distribution of Broad Galaxy Morphologies

open access: yesGalaxies, 2018
We created a catalog of photometric redshift of ∼3,000,000 SDSS galaxies annotated by their broad morphology. The photometric redshift was optimized by testing and comparing several pattern recognition algorithms and variable selection strategies, and ...

Advanced Life Peaked Billions of Years Ago According to Black Holes

open access: yesGalaxies, 2023
The link between black holes and star formation allows for us to draw a connection between black holes and the places and times when extraterrestrial intelligences (ETIs) had a greater chance of emerging.

Destruction of wide binary stars in low mass elliptical galaxies: implications for initial mass function estimates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We discuss the effects of destruction of wide binaries in the nuclei of the lower mass giant elliptical galaxies. We show that the numbers of barium stars and extrinsic S stars should be dramatically reduced in these galaxies compared to what is seen in the largest elliptical galaxies.

Evolution of the Color-Magnitude Relation in Galaxy Clusters at z ~1 from the ACS Intermediate Redshift Cluster Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We apply detailed observations of the Color-Magnitude Relation (CMR) with the ACS/HST to study galaxy evolution in eight clusters at z~1. The early-type red sequence is well defined and elliptical and lenticular galaxies lie on similar CMRs.

FEEDBACK FROM CENTRAL BLACK HOLES IN ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES. III. MODELS WITH BOTH RADIATIVE AND MECHANICAL FEEDBACK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We find, from high-resolution hydro simulations, that winds from active galactic nuclei effectively heat the inner parts (≈100 pc) of elliptical galaxies, reducing infall to the central black hole; and radiative (photoionization and X-ray) heating ...

Triaxiality in elliptical galaxies

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1980
A simple geometrical model of elliptical galaxies having shells with different axial ratios c/a, b/a has been produced to interpret three fundamental key-features of elliptical galaxies: (1) the distribution of the maximum flattening observed; (2) the percentage of ellipticals showing twisting; and (3) the correlation between maximum twisting and ...

A Simulation of the Dependence of Tidal Interaction on Galaxy Type in Compact Groups [PDF]

open access: yesIJAA, 2024, 14, 85 - 100
We have investigated the role that different galaxy types have in galaxy-galaxy interactions in compact groups. N-body simulations of 6 galaxies consisting of a differing mixture of galaxy types were run to compare the relative importance of galaxy population demographic on evolution.

Recent Star-Forming Activity in Local Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes2009MNRAS.398.1651H, 2009
The formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies (EGs) is still an open question. In particular, recent observations suggest that elliptical galaxies are not only simple spheroidal systems of old stars. In this paper we analyze a sample of elliptical galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to study the star-forming activity in ...

How non-linear scaling relations unify dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies

open access: yes, 2010
Dwarf elliptical galaxies are frequently excluded from bright galaxy samples because they do not follow the same linear relations in diagrams involving effective half light radii R_e or mean effective surface brightnesses _e.
