Elliptical galaxies under perturbation

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1986
Three experiments on the initially slightly flattened spheroids (e = 0.45) have been made. The first one is run without perturbation and the others with perturbation. The results have shown that the spheroid without perturbation will evolve to nearly sphere and the other two will almost keep the originally projected shape after perturbation and ...

Hydrodynamical models of elliptical galaxies

Celestial Mechanics, 1988
Hydrodynamical models of elliptical galaxies can be obtained by means of Jeans’equations (see for example Ortega and de Freitas Pacheco, 1986). Following this approach, we consider a mass distribution in steady state which approximates de Vaucouleurs’ r1/4 law, and assume the principal axes of the velocity distribution to be parallel to unitary vectors

Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies

Science, 1993
Elliptical galaxies were once thought to be similar in their structure and dynamics to rotationally flattened bodies like stars. The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems.

Activity in elliptical galaxies

Advances in Space Research, 1999
Abstract Elliptical galaxies exhibit a continuum of behaviour between ‘normal’ and highly active objects, with no clear dividing line between the two classes. High-resolution radio observations show that many bright ellipticals contain parsec-scale radio cores which are qualitatively similar to the central engines of radio galaxies but up to a ...

Isolated elliptical galaxies

This thesis presents a detailed study of a well defined sample of isolated early-type galaxies. We define a sample of 36 nearby isolated early-type galaxies using a strict isolation criteria. New wide-field optical imaging of 20 isolated galaxies confirms their early-type morphology and relative isolation.

Rummaging Through Elliptical Galaxies

1990
High signal-to-noise CCD observations of 13 Virgo galaxies are presented. Smooth galaxy models have been subtracted from the original data, allowing inspection of the contents of these galaxies. Essentially all globular clusters are visible between 1 and 10 kpc radius.

Elliptical Galaxy Chemical Evolution

1999
Conclusions about elliptical and other early-type galaxies come from studies of integrated starlight and studies of giant stars in the nearest galaxies. The abundance distribution for all galaxy types at all radii appears to exhibit a “G dwarf problem” in that the distribution is more strongly peaked than the one-zone closed-box constantyield ...
