Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies

Science, 1993
Elliptical galaxies were once thought to be similar in their structure and dynamics to rotationally flattened bodies like stars. The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems.

Hydrodynamical models of elliptical galaxies

Celestial Mechanics, 1988
Hydrodynamical models of elliptical galaxies can be obtained by means of Jeans’equations (see for example Ortega and de Freitas Pacheco, 1986). Following this approach, we consider a mass distribution in steady state which approximates de Vaucouleurs’ r1/4 law, and assume the principal axes of the velocity distribution to be parallel to unitary vectors

On the shape of elliptical galaxies

Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, 1983
We propose a test for the existence of prolate elliptical galaxies based on the properties of the photometric parameters introduced in the Cordoba surface photometry.

Elliptical galaxies under perturbation

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1986
Three experiments on the initially slightly flattened spheroids (e = 0.45) have been made. The first one is run without perturbation and the others with perturbation. The results have shown that the spheroid without perturbation will evolve to nearly sphere and the other two will almost keep the originally projected shape after perturbation and ...

The Structure of Elliptical Galaxies

1988
Recent imaging investigations highlight the structural diversity of elliptical galaxies. The distribution of light within the cores and envelopes shows a wide range in central and average system stellar densities at any galaxy luminosity. These variations appear to offer new information on galaxy formation mechanisms.

Ellipticity and twisting of isophotes in elliptical galaxies

1979
The study of the ellipticity profiles in a sample of elliptical galaxies and the analysis of previous results makes it possible to establish a classification scheme in five classes as follows: increasing ellipticity, decreasing, with maximum, with minimum and constant.
