The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems.

The distribution of light within the cores and envelopes shows a wide range in central and average system stellar densities at any galaxy luminosity. These variations appear to offer new information on galaxy formation mechanisms.
