Elliptical galaxies and bulges of disc galaxies: Summary of progress and outstanding issues
, 2015Bulge components of disc galaxies are the high-density centers interior to their outer discs. Once thought to be equivalent to elliptical galaxies, their observed properties and formation histories turn out to be richer and more varied than those of ...

Two ten-billion-solar-mass black holes at the centres of giant elliptical galaxies
Nature, 2011Observational work conducted over the past few decades indicates that all massive galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centres. Although the luminosities and brightness fluctuations of quasars in the early Universe suggest that some were ...

Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies
Science, 1993Elliptical galaxies were once thought to be similar in their structure and dynamics to rotationally flattened bodies like stars. The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems.

AGN Feedback in Elliptical Galaxies: Numerical Simulations
, 2011The importance of feedback (radiative and mechanical) from massive black holes at the centers of elliptical galaxies is not in doubt, given the well established relation among black hole mass and galaxy optical luminosity.

Anatomy of elliptical galaxies
Nature, 2009The family of elliptical galaxies is remarkable for the structural regularity of its members. Inspecting irregularities in this regularity could help in understanding how these galaxies form.

On the shape of elliptical galaxies
Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, 1983We propose a test for the existence of prolate elliptical galaxies based on the properties of the photometric parameters introduced in the Cordoba surface photometry.

The Normal Elliptical Galaxies
Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 1970About 13% of bright galaxies are ellipticals (21% SO, 64% Spiral and Im, 2% IO and peculiar). Their obvious features are the smooth luminosity distribution and the near absence of the bright blue stars, HII regions and dust that appear in spiral systems; there is probably very little star formation going on at present in E galaxies.

The Structure of Elliptical Galaxies
1988Recent imaging investigations highlight the structural diversity of elliptical galaxies. The distribution of light within the cores and envelopes shows a wide range in central and average system stellar densities at any galaxy luminosity. These variations appear to offer new information on galaxy formation mechanisms.
