Hidden No More: Spotlight on Tidal Disruption Events in Active Galactic Nuclei

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are typically discovered in previously quiescent galaxies. However, earlier studies have revealed a handful of TDEs occurring in pre‐existing active galactic nuclei (AGN). We discuss AT2019aalc, a promising TDE candidate in an AGN, and compare it to similar sources.

UV Visibility of Moderate-Redshift Giant Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 1998
We show quantitatively whether giant elliptical galaxies would be visible at far UV wavelengths if they were placed at moderate redshift of 0.4-0.5. On the basis of simple cosmological tests, we conclude that giant elliptical galaxies can be detectable ...

How non-linear scaling relations unify dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies

open access: yes, 2010
Dwarf elliptical galaxies are frequently excluded from bright galaxy samples because they do not follow the same linear relations in diagrams involving effective half light radii R_e or mean effective surface brightnesses _e.

Abundance Ratios in Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2016
AbstractThe aim of this study is to determine abundance ratios and star formation histories (SFH) of dwarf ellipticals in the nearby Virgo cluster. We perform a stellar population analysis of 39 dEs and study them using index-index and scaling relations. We find an unusual behaviour where [Na/Fe] is under-abundant w.r.t.

Patterns of wild meat and other protein consumption in the periphery of Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract In Central Africa, human activities are severely impacting terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, threatening the food security of millions of people. Accordingly, sustainable use of wildlife is crucial for the nutrition and livelihoods of many rural communities in the region.

Abundance ratios in dwarf elliptical galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2017
We determine abundance ratios of 37 dwarf ellipticals (dEs) in the nearby Virgo cluster. This sample is representative of the early-type population of galaxies in the absolute magnitude range -19.0 < Mr < -16.0. We analyze their absorption line-strength indices by means of index-index diagrams and scaling relations and use the stellar population ...

The luminosity function of field galaxies

open access: yes, 2011
Schmidt's method for construction of luminosity function of galaxies is generalized by taking into account the dependence of density of galaxies from the distance in the near Universe.

The central elliptical galaxy in fossil groups and formation of BCGs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We study the dominant central giant elliptical galaxies in ``Fossil groups'' using deep optical (R-band) and near infrared (Ks-band) photometry. These galaxies are as luminous as the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), raising immediate interest in their ...
