Global Metallicities From Globulars Through To Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2003
We present narrow band data on dwarf ellipticals in nearby (Virgo, Fornax) and intermediate redshift clusters (A2125, A2218) in order to study their mean age and metallicities. In all four clusters, nucleated dwarf ellipticals display colors that place them on the high metallicity end of the Milky Way globular cluster sequence. Normal dwarf ellipticals

The Outer Halos of Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Recent progress is summarized on the determination of the density distributions of stars and dark matter, stellar kinematics, and stellar population properties, in the extended, low surface brightness halo regions of elliptical galaxies. With integral field absorption spectroscopy and with planetary nebulae as tracers, velocity dispersion and rotation ...

Dwarf elliptical galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1983
We propose that dwarf elliptical galaxies are the bound remnants of more massive stellar systems, such as a parent galaxy which has lost more than half its mass in gas ejection during a burst of star formation, or an unbound tidal debris produced during the interaction of two giant galaxies.

Uv Fluxes In Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1997
The key properties of elliptical galaxies are compared to present-day models calling attention on several points of contradiction. The nature of the UV fluxes and their usefulness to cast light on the age-metallicity dilemma are discussed. Finally, preliminary results of an attempt aimed at reconciling theory with observations by means of an new IMF ...

X-Ray Evidence for the Interaction of the Giant Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4472 with its Virgo Cluster Environment

open access: yes, 1996
We analyze X-ray spatial and spectral data on the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest galaxy in the Virgo cluster. The X-ray contours of NGC 4472 are elongated in the northeast-southwest direction, perhaps as a result of motion through the ...

The Fundamental Plane of Galaxy Group Mergers [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
We present a series of hundreds of collisionless simulations of galaxy group mergers. These simulations are designed to test whether the properties of elliptical galaxies - including the key fundamental plane scaling relation, morphology and kinematics - can be simultaneously reproduced by dry multiple mergers in galaxy groups.

Cold Gas and Star Formation in Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1998
Elliptical galaxies outside dense clusters are observed to contain small amounts (relative to spiral galaxies) of cold interstellar gas. This review discusses the atomic gas, the molecular gas, and the dust in elliptical galaxies. Field elliptical galaxies contain about 0.01 to 0.1 of the cold interstellar matter content of spiral galaxies of similar ...

The Hβ Index and the Ages of Old Stellar Systems [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 1998
The Hβ and some metal line indices, such as Mg2, Fe52, Fe53 of single-age and single-metallicity populations are computed based on the method of evolutionary population synthesis, with careful consideration of the variation of the horizontal-branch ...

HI in elliptical galaxies

open access: yes, 2002
Neutral hydrogen is an important component of the interstellar medium in elliptical galaxies as well as a potentially valuable mass tracer. Until recently, HI surveys of early-type galaxies have been sparse and inhomogeneous but this has changed with the advent of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS; Barnes et al. 2001). We discuss HIPASS observations
