A short γ-ray burst apparently associated with an elliptical galaxy at redshift z = 0.225

Nature, 2005
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) come in two classes: long (> 2 s), soft-spectrum bursts and short, hard events. Most progress has been made on understanding the long GRBs, which are typically observed at high redshift (z ≈ 1) and found in subluminous star ...

A massive star origin for an unusual helium-rich supernova in an elliptical galaxy

Nature, 2009
The unusual helium-rich (type Ib) supernova SN 2005E is distinguished from all supernovae hitherto observed by its faint and rapidly fading light curve, prominent calcium lines in late-phase spectra and lack of any mark of recent star formation near the ...

Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies

Science, 1993
Elliptical galaxies were once thought to be similar in their structure and dynamics to rotationally flattened bodies like stars. The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems.

Anatomy of elliptical galaxies

Nature, 2009
The family of elliptical galaxies is remarkable for the structural regularity of its members. Inspecting irregularities in this regularity could help in understanding how these galaxies form.

On the shape of elliptical galaxies

Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, 1983
We propose a test for the existence of prolate elliptical galaxies based on the properties of the photometric parameters introduced in the Cordoba surface photometry.

IC 225: A Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy with a Peculiar Blue Core

, 2005
We present the discovery of a peculiar blue core in the elliptical galaxy IC 225 by using images and spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The outer parts of the surface brightness profiles of u-, g-, r-, i-, and z-band SDSS images for IC 225

The Normal Elliptical Galaxies

Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 1970
About 13% of bright galaxies are ellipticals (21% SO, 64% Spiral and Im, 2% IO and peculiar). Their obvious features are the smooth luminosity distribution and the near absence of the bright blue stars, HII regions and dust that appear in spiral systems; there is probably very little star formation going on at present in E galaxies.

The Structure of Elliptical Galaxies

1988
Recent imaging investigations highlight the structural diversity of elliptical galaxies. The distribution of light within the cores and envelopes shows a wide range in central and average system stellar densities at any galaxy luminosity. These variations appear to offer new information on galaxy formation mechanisms.
