Chemical characterization and bioactive properties of two aromatic plants: Calendula officinalis L. (flowers) and Mentha cervina L. (leaves) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The chemical composition and bioactive properties of two plants (Calendula officinalis L. and Mentha cervina L.) were studied. Their nutritional value revealed a high content of carbohydrates and low fat levels, and very similar energy values.

Screening of pharmacologically active small molecule compounds identifies antifungal agents against Candida biofilms

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
Candida species have emerged as important and common opportunistic human pathogens, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. The current antifungal therapies either have toxic side effects or are insufficiently effect.

Combining Cyclic Triimidazo Triazine Core With Ethynyl‐N‐Methyl‐Pyridinium Groups for Targeting G‐Quadruplex Structures

open access: yesArchiv der Pharmazie, Volume 358, Issue 7, July 2025.
A mini‐library of cyclic triimidazo triazine derivatives functionalized with one, two, or three ethynyl‐N‐methyl‐pyridinium moieties was synthesized, characterized for the interaction with cancer‐related G‐quadruplexes, and tested in antiproliferative activity screenings on human cancer cells.

Promising Anti-Mitochondrial Agents for Overcoming Acquired Drug Resistance in Multiple Myeloma

open access: yesCells, 2021
Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable tumor due to the high rate of relapse that still occurs. Acquired drug resistance represents the most challenging obstacle to the extension of survival and several studies have been conducted to understand the ...

Induction of somatic mutation and recombination by four inhibitors of eukaryotic topoisomerases assayed in the wing spot test of Drosophila melanogaster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Four inhibitors of eukaryotic topoisomerases were investigated for genotoxic effects in the wing spot test of Drosophila melanogaster. As a somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) this assay assesses mitotic recombination and mutational events of

Etoposide‐induced cancer cell death: roles of mitochondrial VDAC1 and calpain, and resistance mechanisms

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 6, Page 1855-1875, June 2025.
The complex mode of action of the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide in triggering apoptosis involves several mechanisms: overexpression of the mitochondrial protein VDAC1, leading to its oligomerization and formation of a large channel that mediates the release of pro‐apoptotic protein; and overexpression of the apoptosis regulators p53, Bax, and ...

Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of New Marine Alkaloid-Derived Pentacyclic Structures with Anti-Tumoral Potency

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2015
This work describes the synthesis and biological evaluation of a new heterocyclic hybrid derived from the ellipticine and the marine alkaloid makaluvamine A. Pyridoquinoxalinedione 12 was obtained in seven steps with 6.5% overall yield.
