Embedded Java

Proceedings 13th International Symposium on System Synthesis, 2002
The increasing complexity of embedded systems also results in a rapid growth of the software part, which tends to be developed in object oriented programming languages like C++ or Java. Originally planned for embedded systems, Java recently plays again a more important role in the context of embedded system from different points of views.

Interfacing Hardware Devices to Embedded Java [PDF]

open access: possible2011 Brazilian Symposium on Computing System Engineering, 2011
Access to hardware devices is an important requirement to be fulfilled by Java implementations targeting embedded systems because the interaction between the embedded system and the environment where it is inserted on is performed by these devices. In this paper we introduce a method for abstracting hardware devices to embedded Java applications.

Java for embedded systems

IEEE Internet Computing, 1998
Java requires infrastructure to run on embedded devices. This requirement must be traded against the powerful support for dynamic behavior that it offers embedded system developers.

An approach for a dependable Java embedded environment [PDF]

open access: possibleProceedings of the 10th workshop on ACM SIGOPS European workshop: beyond the PC - EW10, 2002
A Java Execution Environment (JEE) presents lots of advantages for embedded architectures. In this paper, we present an approach to build a dependable Java execution environment for Wireless PDAs. It is based on a modular software architecture. Our on-going works focus on reducing software errors, increasing the security of the software and minimizing ...

Asynchronous java accelerator for embedded java virtual machine

Proceedings of the IEEE 6th Circuits and Systems Symposium on Emerging Technologies: Frontiers of Mobile and Wireless Communication (IEEE Cat. No.04EX710), 2004
In this paper, we propose a hardware accelerated Java virtual machine (JVM) based on an asynchronous Java accelerator core which can be integrated with any existing processor and operating system. The scheme of this JVM and the architecture of the Java accelerator is presented. The accelerator is targeted especially for low-power applications.

A Java embedded micro-kernel infrastructure

Proceedings of the 2002 joint ACM-ISCOPE conference on Java Grande - JGI '02, 2002
This abstract summarizes the key ideas of the Java Embedded Micro-kernel (JEM) infrastructure that is capable of dynamically loading service modules at runtime onto devices with limited system resources.

An IP Core for Embedded Java Systems

2007
This paper proposes a multithreaded Java processor as an IP core for Altera's System-on-Programmable-Chip environment. The processor core is an enhancement of the earlier developed multithreaded Java processor named Komodo. It features a real-time capable garbage collection and integrated real-time scheduling schemes. Hence, it is suitable for embedded

Embedded and real-time Java

IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine, 2000
Embedded and real-time system design are properly separate concerns. Many embedded systems lack strict timeliness requirements, while many real-time systems (e.g., telephone central office switches) are not embedded. However, a number of embedded systems do have real-time requirements, including a number of products that fall under the I&M umbrella ...

Adapting Java for embedded development

IEE Review, 2000
Java has many powerful attractions as a platform for software development. In this paper, the author explains how developers of embedded systems can exploit its strengths to maximum advantage and describes how realising the full benefits of Java technology in embedded applications requires a degree of optimisation.
