Young patient`s secondary prevention in ischemic stroke with the percutaneous closure of the patent foramen ovale and postoperative repermeabilisation – case report [PDF]

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Neurology, 2021
Introduction. Cryptogenic stroke represents 25% of all cases. Paradoxical embolism is a common case in people under 45 years old who have patent foramen ovale. Case presentation.

Impending Paradoxical Embolism [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation, 2001
A56-year-old man was admitted with shortness of breath and a painful and pulseless cold left leg. A successful surgical embolectomy from the left femoral artery was performed. A ventilation-perfusion lung scan was consistent with multiple pulmonary emboli. Two months previously, the patient had an anterolateral non–Q-wave myocardial infarction.

What are the odds - Concurrent lower extremity venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, septal embolic myocardial infarction and patent foramen ovale

open access: yesIHJ Cardiovascular Case Reports, 2019
Cerebral ischemic events are more commonly associated with PFOs than non-cerebral paradoxical systemic events, incidence of latter being only around 5–10% of all paradoxical embolisms.

Impending Paradoxical Embolism Traversing Three Cardiac Chambers Presenting With Stroke and Pulmonary Embolism

open access: yesCureus, 2020
A straddling thrombus within a patent foramen ovale (PFO), also known as an impending paradoxical embolism, is an infrequent event that is rarely encountered in clinical practice.

MRI of the lung (3/3)-current applications and future perspectives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
BACKGROUND: MRI of the lung is recommended in a number of clinical indications. Having a non-radiation alternative is particularly attractive in children and young subjects, or pregnant women.

Simultaneous Multifocal Paradoxical Embolism in an Elderly Patient with Patent Foramen Ovale: A Case Report

open access: yesCureus, 2020
About one-third of ischemic strokes may be associated with a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This article presents an unusual case of a 68-year-old woman with simultaneous paradoxical thrombo-embolization to different systemic sites.

Impending paradoxical embolism

open access: yesJournal of Cardiology Cases, 2021
An impending paradoxical embolism (IPDE) is seldom observed in clinical practice. We report a case of IPDE in a 67-year-old female with severe dyspnea and hypotension, which was detected and successfully treated with emergent cardiac surgery. The optimal treatment is still controversial.

Playing games with a thrombus: a dangerous match. Paradoxical embolism from a huge central venous cathether thrombus: a case report

open access: yesCardiovascular Ultrasound, 2010
Thromboembolism is a major cause of death in cancer patients. The association between paraneoplastic hypercoagulability of oncological patients and long-term central venous catheters (CVC) may result in CVC associated thrombosis.

Increased prevalence of potential right-to-left shunting in children with sickle cell anaemia and stroke [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
'Paradoxical' embolization via intracardiac or intrapulmonary right-to-left shunts (RLS) is an established cause of stroke. Hypercoagulable states and increased right heart pressure, which both occur in sickle cell anaemia (SCA), predispose to ...

Doppler ultrasound assessment of minor atrial septal defects in patients with paradoxical embolism

open access: yesАнналы клинической и экспериментальной неврологии, 2021
Minor atrial septal defect (ASD) may be one of the pathways of paradoxical embolism in the brain. Few scientific papers have investigated the relationship between ASD (excluding patent foramen ovale) and the occurrence of ischemic stroke.
