ON CALIBRATIONS USING THE CRAB NEBULA AND MODELS OF THE NEBULAR X-RAY EMISSION [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Motivated by a paper of Kirsch et al. on possible use of the Crab Nebula as a standard candle for calibrating X-ray response functions, we examine consequences of intrinsic departures from a single (absorbed) power law upon such calibrations.

Jungian categories as modes of reading: The case of Graham Greene's The Heart of the Matter and Aldous Huxley's Time Must Have a Stop

open access: yesOrbis Litterarum, EarlyView.
Abstract This essay advocates renewed attention toward Jungian literary criticism, emphasizing its unique and creative perspectives on both fictional worlds and on reading. A fresh turn to Jungian criticism offers, in particular, valuable insight for texts on the peripheries of the canon.

Inductive spikes in the Crab Nebula - a theory of gamma-ray flares

open access: yes, 2017
We show that the mysterious, rapidly variable emission at ~400 MeV observed from the Crab Nebula by the AGILE and Fermi experiments could be the result of a sudden drop in the mass-loading of the pulsar wind.

X-Ray Emission from the Guitar Nebula [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1997
We have detected weak soft X-ray emission from the Pulsar Wind Nebula trailing the high velocity star PSR 2224+65 (the `Guitar Nebula'). This X-ray flux gives evidence of ~10^7 eV particles in the pulsar wind and constrains the properties of the post-shock flow.

Discovery of an Extended γ-Ray Emission around the Supernova Remnant Candidate Associated with PSR J0837–2454

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Motivated by the recent discovery of a low-surface-brightness diffuse emission, a supernova remnant (SNR) candidate, surrounding the young pulsar PSR J0837–2454, we carry out a likelihood analysis of the γ -ray data obtained by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space ...

ESG Rating Disagreement and Sustainability Reporting: The Role of Reporting Standards and Assurance Practices

open access: yesCorporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 5446-5468, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Though environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings have the common ambition of measuring companies' sustainability‐related risks, their usefulness is undermined by the issue of disagreement among diverse ESG ratings. Among the determinants of ESG disagreement, this paper focuses on the input information used by rating agencies, with ...

Bulbs and Biopower: Managing Produce and Price in the Age of Agri‐Logistics

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 57, Issue 4, Page 1194-1215, July 2025.
Abstract This paper deploys the material and discursive politics of storage as a lens into agrarian change in rural India. Focusing on onions (Allium cepa), a price volatile crop and a kitchen staple, it maps out the contested meanings of and motivations for storage among growers, governments, and agri‐logistics companies. Specifically, this paper asks

Discovery of Radial Spectral Hardening in the Hot Bubble of Planetary Nebula BD+30°3639 with Median Energy Imaging

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We apply an imaging analysis technique to study the spatial distribution of the X-ray spectral hardness across the hot bubble of planetary nebula BD+30°3639.

Workers’ Perspectives on an Unjust Transition: Place, History, and Workplace Closure at Grangemouth Oil Refinery, Scotland

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 57, Issue 4, Page 1576-1597, July 2025.
Abstract Fossil fuel workers are central protagonists in achieving a “just transition” to a greener and fairer economy. This article examines workforce attitudes towards transition, redundancy, and restructuring following Petroineos’ announcement that the Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland would close by 2025.
