Attribution of subseasonal cold‐spell forecasts to remote drivers using nudging experiments

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Nudging experiments with the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model show that Northern European cold spells can arise from different drivers. Some events are predominantly influenced by stratospheric dynamics, while others also involve important tropospheric processes.

Error in ERA5 2‐m temperature identified using GraphCast

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We identify a recurrent error in ERA5 2‐m temperature over the Ethiopian Highlands that occurs predominantly at 0600 UTC on ≈7%$$ \approx 7\% $$ of dates. The artefact is caused by the 2D optimal‐interpolation scheme assimilating temporally displaced surface reports (e.g., 0900 UTC) into the 0600 UTC analysis.

Expectation-maximization analysis of spatial time series [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2007
Expectation maximization (EM) is used to estimate the parameters of a Gaussian Mixture Model for spatial time series data. The method is presented as an alternative and complement to Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis.

Low-frequency variability of terrestrial water budget in China using GRACE satellite measurements from 2003 to 2010

open access: yesGeodesy and Geodynamics, 2015
Mass variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) obtained from eight years of satellite data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) are used to describe low frequency TWS through Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis.

Decadal‐scale drivers of South Pacific hydroclimate variability

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using prescribed SST perturbations in the IGCM4 model, we investigate the mechanisms by which three major modes of low‐frequency climate variability—the IPO, AMV, and Southern Ocean SST‐driven midlatitude jet shifts—modulate the South Pacific hydroclimate.

Evaluation of ERA5 Reanalysis Precipitation Over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 11, November 2026.
This study comprehensively validates ERA5 reanalysis precipitation against 39 ground‐based stations in the DPRK over 40 years (1981–2020). Key findings reveal: (1) ERA5 shows moderate annual skill (CC = 0.77) with systematic intensity‐dependent biases—overestimating light winter precipitation (false alarms) and smoothing extreme summer monsoon events; (

An Ionosphere Specification Technique Based on Data Ingestion Algorithm and Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A data ingestion method in reproducing ionospheric electron density and total electron content (TEC) was developed to incorporate TEC products from the Madrigal Database into the NeQuick 2 model.

Basin‐Scale Marine Heatwave Types in the Gulf of Mexico: Wind–Humidity Controls on Latent Heat‐Loss Suppression and Ocean‐State Modulation of Vertical Thermal Structure

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 11, November 2026.
Abstract Marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) have become more frequent and intense, yet the mechanisms governing basin‐scale events remain incompletely understood. EOF–k‐means clustering of event‐mean sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) during 1982–2024 identifies four recurrent, seasonally dependent spatial regimes: two stronger ...

Stratospheric Circulation in the Southern Hemisphere: Links to Tropical Winds, Ozone, and the Hunga Eruption—Part 1: Evidence From ERA5 Reanalysis

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The interannual variability of the Southern Hemisphere polar vortex plays a key role in ozone depletion and recovery but this variability and its teleconnection patterns are less understood than in the Northern Hemisphere. Using ERA5 reanalysis data from 1980 to 2022 (43 years), we studied the variability of the Southern Hemisphere vortex by ...
