Empirical software engineering for agent programming

Proceedings of the 2nd edition on Programming systems, languages and applications based on actors, agents, and decentralized control abstractions, 2012
Empirical software engineering is a branch of software engineering in which empirical methods are used to evaluate and develop tools, languages and techniques. In this position paper we argue for the use of empirical methods to advance the area of agent programming.

The Role of Empirical Study in Software Engineering

2006 30th Annual IEEE/NASA Software Engineering Workshop, 2006
Although most scientific and engineering disciplines view empiricism as a basic aspect of their discipline, that view has not been the tradition in software engineering. There should be a symbiotic relationship between the development of theories and empirical studies that test and evolve that theory.

Empirically Driven Software Engineering Research

2010
Software engineering is a design discipline. As such, its engineering methods are based on cognitive instead of physical laws, and their effectiveness depends highly on context. Empirical methods can be used to observe the effects of software engineering methods in vivo and in vitro, to identify improvement potentials, and to validate new research ...

Is there a Future for Empirical Software Engineering?

Proceedings of the 10th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, 2016
Empirical studies of different kinds are nowadays regularly published in software engineering journals and conferences. Many empirical studies have been published, but are this sufficient? Individual studies are important, but the actual potential in relation to evidence-based software engineering [1] is not fully exploited.

Is there a future for empirical software engineering?

Proceedings of the 2006 ACM/IEEE international symposium on Empirical software engineering, 2006
This talk provides a personal perspective on the evolution of empirical software engineering. The evolution has included the focus of the studies, e.g., from attempting to demonstrate the effectiveness of various processes to the building of knowledge around a domain or a set of processes.
