Abstract A recent debate has emerged between Caspar et al. (2024) and Herculano‐Houzel (2023) on inferring extinct dinosaur cognition by estimating brain neuron counts. While thought‐provoking, the discussion largely overlooks the function of cognition, as well as partly neglects the difficulties involved in estimating neuron numbers, which according ...

What to Reform in the European Budget? Some Reflections on the Stakes of the Current Budget Review Process [PDF]
The EU budget is the financial tool supporting European integration. The way it has developed over decades, both as concerns revenues and expenditure, superposed to a complex decision-making process, where member states retain veto rights in crucial ...

The EMU sovereign-debt crisis: Fundamentals, expectations and contagion [PDF]
We offer a detailed empirical investigation of the European sovereign debt crisis based on the theoretical model by Arghyrou and Tsoukalas (2010). We find evidence of a marked shift in market pricing behaviour from a ‘convergence-trade’ model before ...

Osteohistology of two phorusrhacids reveals uninterrupted growth strategy
Abstract Phorusrhacidae were apex predators that primarily dominated South America ecosystems for at least 40 million years with their imposing size and predatory lifestyle—yet some aspects of their biology remain poorly understood. Osteohistology is a tool for understanding growth dynamics and biomechanical adaptations.

Abstract Studies of Upper Cretaceous deposits in North America have provided invaluable insights into the continental ecosystems of this time. Theropod (Saurischia, Dinosauria) pedal phalanges are commonplace in these deposits but can be difficult to identify at a finer taxonomic resolution.

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: Magnetometry
Abstract Magnetometry is a non‐invasive technique to characterize the behaviour of magnetic materials of which the most common contain Fe, Co, and Ni. Vibrating sample magnetometers (VSMs) vibrate samples at a fixed frequency in a static, homogeneous magnetic field to induce a voltage in pick up coils according to Faraday's law of induction.
