Cerebral Infarction: Epidemiology, Classification, Mechanisms, Diagnosis, and Management

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2026.
Within minutes after ischemia onset, deprivation of oxygen and glucose leads to rapid ATP depletion, resulting in failure of Na+/K+‐ATPase activity and membrane depolarization. This ionic imbalance promotes uncontrolled synaptic release of glutamate and excessive activation of postsynaptic NMDA and AMPA receptors.

Hydrocortisone supresses inflammatory activity of metalloproteinase - 8 in carotid plaque

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, 2015
Objective:Matrix metalloproteinases are inflammatory biomarkers involved in carotid plaque instability. Our objective was to analyze the inflammatory activity of plasma and carotid plaque MMP-8 and MMP-9 after intravenous administration of hydrocortisone.

Genetic susceptibility loci for cardiovascular disease and their impact on atherosclerotic plaques [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in part caused by lipid uptake in the vascular wall, but the exact underlying mechanisms leading to acute myocardial infarction and stroke remain poorly understood. Large consortia identified

Pathophysiology and management of reperfusion injury and hyperperfusion syndrome after carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting

open access: yesExperimental & Translational Stroke Medicine, 2016
Cerebral hyperperfusion is a relatively rare syndrome with significant and potentially preventable clinical consequences. The pathophysiology of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) may involve dysregulation of the cerebral vascular system and ...

Recurrent pseudoaneurysm after carotid endarterectomy

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Surgery Cases and Innovative Techniques, 2019
Pseudoaneurysms and patch infections are known complications of carotid endarterectomy with patch angioplasty. Although they are rare occurrences, they carry high morbidity and almost uniformly require surgical intervention.

Cerebral perfusion MR imaging using FAIR-HASTE in chronic carotid occlusive disease: comparison with dynamic susceptibility contrast-perfusion MR imaging. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
To determine the efficacy of flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery using half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo (FAIR-HASTE) in detecting cerebral hypoperfusion in chronic carotid occlusive disease, we subjected 12 patients with various degrees

Bridging the Distance for Ischaemic Stroke Treatment in Regional Australia: A Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Rural Health, Volume 34, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Background One comprehensive stroke centre (CSC), in North Queensland, Australia, supports almost 700 000 people across 750 000 km2. Access to urgent ischaemic stroke treatment is challenging for remote and regional residents, who are more likely to carry stroke risk factors and have a 17% higher stroke incidence than those in major cities ...

An oral glucose tolerance test in pregnancy and its association with future cardiovascular diseases

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 4, Page 3146-3154, April 2026.
Abstract Aims/hypothesis Gestational diabetes and abnormal 100‐g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) results in pregnancy are associated with type 2 diabetes, but their relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is less clear. We evaluated the risk of CVD according to the number of abnormal OGTT values during pregnancy.

Carotid endarterectomy for carotid stenosis: audit at a tertiary referral centre [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Prospective randomised controlled trials performed in North America and Europe have demonstrated that the risk of future stroke or death is substantially reduced by performing carotid endarterectomy in symptomatic patients who have severe carotid ...
