Surgical Clinics of North America, 1975
During the last 20 years carotid endarterectomy has become an important method of treatment for selected patients with arteriosclerotic cerebrovascular disease. Improvement in selection of patients for operation, in anesthetic management, and in surgical techniques has resulted in a decline in complications associated with the operation.

Extraluminal Carotid Endarterectomy
Archives of Surgery, 1972Twenty-five patients have undergone carotid endarterectomy by extraluminal dissection of the plaque. An incision is made into the media of the common and internal carotid arteries onto, but not through, the plaque to be excised. The plaque can then be dissected from the carotid bifurcation prior to entrance into the lumen of the carotid artery.

Carotid Endarterectomy without Shunt
Neurosurgery, 1981This series of 280 consecutive carotid endarterectomies was performed on 222 patients without an indwelling shunt or electroencephalograpic monitoring. Symptomatic patients with lateralized and nonlateralized transient ischemic attacks, ulcerated atherosclerotic plaques. One-third of the patients had severe bilateral stenosis or unilateral stenosis and
