Pathophysiology of Himalayan endemic goiter [PDF]
Goiter prevalence and iodine metabolism were studied in areas of endemic goiter in the Himalayas in India and Nepal. Similar studies were also made in Ceylon. The results are compatible with the hypothesis that severe environmental deficiency of iodide is the primary factor responsible for endemic goiter in these areas.

Endemic goiter and endemic thyroid disorders
World Journal of Surgery, 1991AbstractThe primary role of iodine deficiency in goitrogenesis and the prevention and treatment of endemic goiter by iodine supplementation is firmly established. Unfortunately, implementation of iodine prophylaxis programs has met with considerable technical and socioeconomic difficulties.

Electroencephalogram in Juvenile Endemic Goiter and in Acute Goiter
Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1971EEG were taken in 27 cases of juvenile endemic goiter and in 5 cases of acute goiter in endemic areas. These conditions, which may be equated nosologically, are virtually always marked by bioelectric changes, which continue even after the thyroid swelling has subsided.

This paper is the result of an analysis of a publication by Munoz, Perez, and Scrimshaw in this Journal and of another by the same authors. The former lists the findings in 22 entire departments in Guatemala; the latter, the observations in each of the 105 localities in which the survey was conducted.

The most prominent clinical manifestation of iodine deficiency is goiter, a disease which has widespread prevalence throughout the Pacific area. In the countries to the east from Alaska to the southern tip of Chile, in those areas which border the western shores, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and the many islands of the Pacific, goiter has been ...

Immunological features of endemic goiter
Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, 1986Some immune aspects of simple endemic goiter have been studied through a comparison of IgG, IgA, IgM, kappa and lambda chains, and C3 and C4 in the peripheral blood of 59 patients operated on for goiter and the peripheral blood of 49 normal controls. The median IgM was lower in the goiter blood.

Endemic Goiter and Endemic Cretinism in the Andean Region [PDF]
Abstract Analysis of iodide deficiency, thyroid function, altitude, neural and motor dysfunction and a variety of social and economic variables to ascertain the prevalence of endemic goiter in eight rural Andean villages showed that as many as 54 per cent of the population in certain villages had goiter, and neural and motor abnormalities ...

Summary Endemic goiter is still a public health problem in East Java, as indicated by its high prevalence (25% and 97%) in school children of two villages and the widespread origin of clinical cases. The content of iodine in salt consumed in endemic areas is not sufficient to be of prophylactic value.

Endemic Goiter in Northern Virginia
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1967ABSTRACT Field and clinical studies of endemic goiter in Northern Virginia during 1965 and 1966 are summarized. The hypotheses tested were (a) that a goiter endemia would be found in a rural population served by shallow wells and (b) that, in this type of population, goiter prevalence would be higher among those served by shallow wells than in a ...

Endemic Goiter in Portugal [PDF]
Severe endemic goiter and cretinism had been known to exist in Portugal since the beginning of the century. In 1971 the most affected area was defined and prophylaxis with iodized salt was initiated. This area was expanded in 1979 to its current size (fig. 1, region B).
