Existence, multiplicity and stability of endemic states for an age-structured S-I epidemic model [PDF]
We study an S--I type epidemic model in an age-structured population, with mortality due to the disease. A threshold quantity is found that controls the stability of the disease-free equilibrium and guarantees the existence of an endemic equilibrium. We obtain conditions on the age-dependence of the susceptibility to infection that imply the uniqueness

This study highlights the iodine nutritional status among Chinese children aged 3–6 years, revealing that while levels are generally adequate. Our findings stress the importance of tailored iodine supplementation to support optimal health and development in preschoolers.

Multi-Layer SIS Model with an Infrastructure Network [PDF]
This paper deals with the spread of diseases over both a population network and an infrastructure network. We develop a layered networked spread model for a susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) pathogen-borne disease spreading over a human contact network and an infrastructure network, and refer to it as a layered networked susceptible-infected-water-

Meigs syndrome presenting with recurrent unilateral pleural effusion
This case illustrates Meigs syndrome secondary to an ovarian fibroma, which resulted in recurrent pleural effusion. A thorough workup and pleural biopsy excluded other potential pathologies. Abstract Pelvic tumours are a rare cause of pleural effusion. We describe an approach to a case of Meigs syndrome with recurrent unilateral pleural effusion.

The objective of this article is to characterize the value of centralized iodization facilities (CIFs) to advance Ethiopia's salt iodization programme and its impact on the population iodine status. The analysis is based on a review of publications relating to salt iodization and iodine deficiency control efforts in Ethiopia.

Large number of endemic equilibria for disease transmission models in patchy environment [PDF]
We show that disease transmission models in a spatially heterogeneous environment can have a large number of coexisting endemic equilibria. A general compartmental model is considered to describe the spread of an infectious disease in a population distributed over several patches.

Abstract Background and Aim Goiter is a major source of morbidity in the world, especially in the developing world, where dietary iodine deficiency, a known cause of this condition, is endemic. The diagnosis is mostly by ultrasonography (USG) scan, which can give anatomical, pathological, and functional information for the management of goiter.
