Endocoil magnetic resonance imaging quantification of external anal sphincter atrophy
Abstract Background Anal function depends on the integrity and quality of the sphincter muscles. The diagnosis of external anal sphincter atrophy on endocoil magnetic resonography has been associated with poor outcome from sphincter repair, although the imaging criteria for atrophy remain unclear.

The Endocoil Stent for Malignant Biliary Obstruction
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics of North America, 1999The Endocoil (Instent, Inc., Eden Prairie, MN), first introduced in 1993, is a self-expandable nitinol stent made of a coil spring of nickel-titanium alloy. Advantages of the Endocoil in patients with malignant biliary obstruction were thought to include increased radial force with more rapid stricture dilation, inhibition of tumor ingrowth caused by ...

High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging of the anorectal region without an endocoil
Abdominal Imaging, 1999To evaluate the feasibility of a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique in detailed imaging of the anal sphincter and lower pelvic region without the use of an endoluminal coil.MRIs with an external phased array coil (T1- and T2-weighted turbo spin echo) were performed in 22 volunteers and 12 patients with an anal fistula, an anal ...

The failure of external anal sphincter repair may relate to sphincter atrophy where muscle fibers are replaced by fat, seen on MRI due to the differing signals returned by fat and muscle tissue. Manometry, electrophysiology, and MRI with an endocoil were performed on 34 fecally incontinent patients with intact sphincters on endosonography.
