Since 1905, when Professor Ernest Starling first used the term ‘hormone’ in one of four Croonian lectures at the Royal College of Physicians, a lot has changed in the world of endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of hormones and subsequent pathologies that arise from their imbalance.

The Endocrinology of Varicoceles
Journal of Urology, 1988There is good evidence of an associated abnormality in testicular hormone production and spermatogenesis in some men with varicoceles. This abnormality can be demonstrated with dynamic tests of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and by measuring seminal plasma androgen levels.

PIP: The changing flow of ovarian signals apparently regulates the nature of the activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary unit. The ovary has many putative intraovarian regulators. It has many compartments, each with a different and variable biological property.

Melanoma has a better prognosis in women than in men, may be exacerbated by pregnancy, and has been to reported to respond to hormonal manipulations. Laboratory investigations have demonstrated that both animal and human melanomas may respond to changes in the hormonal milieu.

The interactions of fungi and chemical messenger molecules, hormones or pheromones, are addressed in this chapter. These interactions include mammalian fungal pathogens, also plant pathogens, or non-pathogenic fungi, which can result in functional responses in receptor- or non-receptor-mediated fashions.

Endocrinology as Paradigm, Endocrinology as Authority
Endocrinology, 1984What I would like to talk about with you tonight is endocrinology as paradigm, and endocrinology as authority. What is the process by which the ideas in a science such as endocrinology change with time, and how best can new ideas develop? How do ideas in science influence society, aside from the obvious effect of technology?

Abstract: The thymus involutes relatively early in life; cellular immune deficiencies of aging correspond to decline in function of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐endocrine axis. Recent studies point to important roles for the pituitary, the pineal, and the autonomic nervous system as well as the thyroid, gonads and adrenals in the thymus integrity and ...
