The surgical approach to treatment of endometriosis is shifting away from laparotomy toward endoscopy as technology and experience improve. All patients with minimal or mild disease and a significant portion of those with advanced disease can be treated endoscopically with little difference in clinical outcome but a significant difference in cost.

Endometriosis is an oestrogen-dependent disorder that can result in substantial morbidity, including pelvic pain, multiple operations, and infertility. New findings on the genetics, the possible roles of the environment and the immune system, and intrinsic abnormalities in the endometrium of affected women and secreted products of endometriotic lesions

Ectopic endometrial tissue is found in 1.5% to 6.2% of women of reproductive age, in up to 60% of those with dysmenorrhoea, and in up to 30% of women with subfertility, with a peak incidence at around 40 years of age. However, symptoms may not correlate with laparoscopic findings. We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following ...

Endometriosis remains an enigma despite having been extensively studied. Its aetiology remains unclear, although there is a positive correlation with retrograde menstruation, probably with a background genetic predisposition. Traditionally, the symptoms of endometriosis are said to be pelvic pain and infertility, but, while a causal link between these ...

Endometriosis is a common disease associated with pelvic pain and infertility. The etiology and physiology are poorly understood, often frustrating clinicians and patient. Treatment may be medical or surgical, or a combination of these. Nursing care involves education of couples about endometriosis and its physical and psychological implications.

Endometriosis is an important contributing factor to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have each been implicated in the establishment of endometriotic lesions. Since relaxin regulates the expression of MMPs and VEGF in the endometrium, we tested the hypothesis that ...

AbstractMapping genetic risk factors for endometriosis continues from early studies on women’s health initiated by Nick Martin and Susan Treloar. Their initial recruitment of endometriosis cases and family members received a major boost and became a flagship project within the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for the Discovery of Common Human Disease.
