Endogenous endophthalmitis still presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge even with improvements in therapeutic modalities. The main prognostic factor is the virulence of the causative organism: once the organism enters the eye, it rapidly destroys ocular tissues. With the increasing ability to prolong the life of very ill patients, incidence of

Endophthalmitis carries a poor visual prognosis for patients and can be a potentially blinding condition that may result in loss of the eye. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are imperative to save the eye. Delay in diagnosis affects visual prognosis and therefore doctors should be aware of the presenting features of endophthalmitis.

Postoperative endophthalmitis is a rare complication of ophthalmic surgery. The use of prophylactic antibiotics and scrupulous surgical techniques will help to reduce its incidence, but sporadic cases may still occur. If postoperative endophthalmitis is a diagnostic possibility aggressive investigation and initial management improves the prognosis ...

Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of endogenous endophthalmitis. During the last 20 years about 30 cases have been published, all of which showed similar clinical features and a profound visual loss mainly owing to delayed diagnosis. This case report is about an otherwise healthy 41-year-old woman whose diagnosis was established 17 days after the ...

Listeria endophthalmitis developed in a patient who was being treated for extensive metastases of carcinoma of the breast. At the time of admission she was receiving cobalt therapy, chemotherapy, and high doses of oral steroids. The early identification of organisms with an immediate paracentesis and the early institution of broad-spectrum antibiotics ...

Prophylaxis of Endophthalmitis
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 1994ABSTRACT Prophylactic antibiotics can be administered by various routes to prevent endophthalmitis. Topical application is simple and minimally invasive, but it provides relatively poor penetration into the vitreous. Collagen shields are effective in delivering therapeutic levels of antibiotics to the cornea and aqueous but not to the ...

Endophthalmitis refers to bacterial or fungal infection of the vitreous and/or aqueous humors of the eye. Bacterial endophthalmitis occurs most commonly after eye surgery or penetrating ocular trauma (exogenous endophthalmitis), but may also occur from hematogenous seeding during bacteremia (endogenous endophthalmitis).
