Abstract: Endophthalmitis is an eye inflammation, involving the vitreous cavity and its surrounding tissues responsible for vision. In most cases, an infection triggers this inflammation. The infection can be caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites. The occurrence of this severe and devastating inflammation can be related to surgical procedures,

Seventy patients referred with a diagnosis of endophthalmitis underwent anterior chamber and vitreous taps with intracameral antibiotic injections. Fifty-four eyes were culture positive, 34 (63%) after previous intraocular surgery, 12 (22%) had sustained penetrating trauma, and 8 (15%) resulted from a metastatic infection. Of 61 total isolates, 48 (79%)

Infectious endophthalmitis can be caused by organisms from the environment entering the eye after ocular surgery (62%) or after penetrating ocular trauma (20%) (exogenous endophthalmitis), or can result from hematogeneous spread of organisms to the eye (8%) (endogenous endophthalmitis).

Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of endogenous endophthalmitis. During the last 20 years about 30 cases have been published, all of which showed similar clinical features and a profound visual loss mainly owing to delayed diagnosis. This case report is about an otherwise healthy 41-year-old woman whose diagnosis was established 17 days after the ...

Prophylaxis of Endophthalmitis
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 1994ABSTRACT Prophylactic antibiotics can be administered by various routes to prevent endophthalmitis. Topical application is simple and minimally invasive, but it provides relatively poor penetration into the vitreous. Collagen shields are effective in delivering therapeutic levels of antibiotics to the cornea and aqueous but not to the ...

Chronic pseudophakic endophthalmitis versus saccular endophthalmitis
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 1997A retrospective survey of 1456 cataract operations done at one hospital from 1991 to 1994 found three cases of chronic pseudophakic endophthalmitis. In two of these cases and one referred from another center, microbiological studies from aqueous humor, capsular bag, and vitreous humor were performed using an identical technique.

Postoperative endophthalmitis is a rare complication of ophthalmic surgery. The use of prophylactic antibiotics and scrupulous surgical techniques will help to reduce its incidence, but sporadic cases may still occur. If postoperative endophthalmitis is a diagnostic possibility aggressive investigation and initial management improves the prognosis ...

Endophthalmitis, one of the most challenging ocular diseases, is also among the most variable in terms of visual outcome: some eyes retain useful reading vision and some are lost. Endophthalmitis is an inflammatory response to bacterial, fungal, parasitic, or viral invasion of the eye.

Endophthalmitis refers to bacterial or fungal infection of the vitreous and/or aqueous humors of the eye. Bacterial endophthalmitis occurs most commonly after eye surgery or penetrating ocular trauma (exogenous endophthalmitis), but may also occur from hematogenous seeding during bacteremia (endogenous endophthalmitis).
