Microbiomes and Endophytes [PDF]

open access: possible, 2020
The nature of microbiomes and endophytic plant growth-promoting bacteria is elaborated. For a start, the plant rhizosphere (bacteria around the roots) and the plant endosphere (bacteria inside of the plant) are colonized by different subsets of the bacteria that are found in the bulk soil.

An Overview of Endophytic Microbes: Endophytism Defined

2000
To microbes, land plants present a complex, spatially and temporally diverse ecological habitat. Symbiotic associations between microorganisms and plants are ancient and fundamental, and many examples of complex and highly specific symbioses between plants and microbes have been described in detail.

Fungal endophytes of grasses

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2012
Epichloae endophytes form mutualistic symbiotic associations with temperate grasses and confer on the host a number of bioprotective benefits through production of fungal secondary metabolites and changed host metabolism. Maintenance of this mutualistic interaction requires that growth of the endophyte within the host is restricted.

An Introduction to Endophytes

2017
Endophytic micro-organisms are hidden companions of plants living mutually beneficial life inside the host plant. Though these endophytes are supposed to be associated and evolved with land plants, endophytes are recognised in last century. Beneficial effects of endophytes are attaining importance with the possibility of obtaining novel medicinally ...

Endophytes as sources of antibiotics

Biochemical Pharmacology, 2017
Until a viable alternative can be accessible, the emergence of resistance to antimicrobials requires the constant development of new antibiotics. Recent scientific efforts have been aimed at the bioprospecting of microorganisms' secondary metabolites, with special emphasis on the search for antimicrobial natural products derived from endophytes ...

Patents on Endophytic Fungi

Recent Patents on Biotechnology, 2017
Endophytic fungi are taxonomically and ecologically heterogeneous group of organisms, mainly belonging to the Ascomycotina and Deuteromycotina. Endophytes usually produce the enzymes necessary for the colonization of plant tissues. Endophytes are able to utilize components of plant cells without disturbing host metabolism, which is confirmed by isozyme

Microarray analysis of endophyte-infected and endophyte-free tall fescue

Journal of Plant Physiology, 2010
Many grasses have mutualistic symbioses with fungi of the family Clavicipitaceae. Tall fescue can harbor the obligate endophyte, Neotyphodium coenophialum that is asexually propagated and transmitted via host seeds. Total RNA was isolated from pseudostems of known endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) plants and tested in triplicate on the ...

Contrasting Toxic‐Endophyte Contamination between Endophyte‐Free and Nontoxic‐Endophyte Tall Fescue Pastures

Crop Science, 2005
The fungal endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum Morgan‐Jones and Gams is abundant in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and one strategy to alleviate detrimental effects on livestock is to plant endophyte‐free cultivars; however, these pastures frequently become recontaminated by toxic‐endophyte tall fescue.

Fungal Endophytes of Grasses

Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 1990
Mutualistic interactions between species are receiving increased attention from ecologists, although research lags far behind analogous work on competition or predator-prey interactions. Most research has focused on rather showy mutualisms such as pollination or fruit dispersal and has suggested that mutualisms are more important in tropical ...
