Effect of very preterm delivery on outcomes following in utero spina bifida repair

open access: yesPregnancy, Volume 1, Issue 3, May 2025.
Abstract Objective In utero fetal spina bifida repair decreases the risk for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion including ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement, reverses hindbrain herniation, and improves motor function with a higher likelihood of independent ambulation. Unfortunately, in utero surgery can be complicated by preterm delivery.

The Na+,K+,2Cl− Cotransporter, Not Aquaporin 1, Sustains Cerebrospinal Fluid Secretion While Controlling Brain K+ Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 6, February 10, 2025.
CSF is secreted by the choroid plexus in each ventricle. The choroid plexus water channel, aquaporin 1, is not required for CSF secretion and thus brain fluid dynamics, whereas the Na+, K+, 2Cl‐ cotransporter 1 is a key factor in this process. Elevated ventricular K+ alters the transport activity to clear brain K+ while maintaining the CSF secretion ...

Can We Predict Early Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy Failure? The Role of Ultra-Early Postoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Predicting Early Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy Failure

open access: yesWorld Neurosurgery: X, 2019
Background: The success of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) depends on multiple preoperative and intraoperative factors. The multifactorial influence adds an element of unpredictability to the outcome of the most well-planned procedure.

Potential protective role of reactive astrocytes in the periventricular parenchyma in congenital hydrocephalus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background Cerebrospinal fluid accumulation in hydrocephalus produces an elevation of intraventricular pressure with pathological consequences on the periventricular brain parenchyma including ischemia, oedema, oxidative stress, and accumulation of ...
