Anal endosonography became a valuable imaging method for diagnosis of anal diseases because of its accessibility, relative simplicity of performance, and low cost. It is used most often to detect anal sphincter defects, to classify anal fistulas and perianal abscesses, and to stage anal tumors.

70 women were examined by transvaginal scanning after a pelvic gynecological examination revealed the suspicion of an ectopic pregnancy. In 32 cases a pelviscopy confirmed an extrauterine pregnancy, 29 of those were detected previously by transvaginal scanning. In 29 other patients the suspected diagnosis could be excluded.

Endosonography occupies something of an intermediate position between endoscopy and abdominal sonography, for it can visualize the surface of hollow organs as well as define structures behind the surface, doing so with an optimum level of detail. This is due chiefly to the physical properties of the ultrasound beam.
