The morphology of endothelium is well known from electron-microscopic examination. Aided by new suitable examination methods such as the endothelial culture (Maruyama, 1963; Gimbrone, 1976), the detection of endothelial cells in blood (Herbeuval and Feurot, 1964), and the "Hautchen't-method (Sinapius, 1952; Warren, 1965; Sade and Folkman, 1972; Riese ...

Abnormal endothelial function plays a pivota role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. Due to lack of autoregulation of glucose transport in the presence of high extracellular glucose concentrations, intracellular hyperglycaemia induces a series of metabolic changes that ultimately lead to the genesis of both microvascular complications (the ...

Endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent skin vasoreactivity in the elderly
Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, 2002It was demonstrated that endothelium-dependent vasoreactivity, an aspect of endothelial functioning, is impaired in coronary and brachial arteries, and in skeletal muscle resistance vessels of elderly people. However, little data is available about the influence of aging per se on the endothelial function of the skin microcirculation.

The endothelium in atherogenesis
Lupus, 2000The focus of this article is an overview of the endothelial changes that initiate and perpetuate the process of atherogenesis. The endothelium can undergo a series of changes which allow it to participate in the inflammatory response; this is known as endothelial cell activation (ECA).

In recent decades, it has become evident that the endothelium is by no means a passive inner lining of blood vessels. This 'organ' with a large surface (approximately 350 m2) and a comparatively small total mass (approximately 110 g) is actively involved in vital functions of the cardiovascular system, including regulation of perfusion, fluid and ...
