On the Geometry and Topology of Discrete Groups: An Overview

open access: yesMathematics
In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to the main notions of geometric group theory and of asymptotic topology of finitely generated groups. We will start by presenting the basis of discrete groups and of the topology at infinity, then we will ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Electronic cigarette use in relation to changes in smoking status and respiratory symptoms

open access: yesTobacco Induced Diseases
Introduction How e-cigarette use relates to changes in smoking status and respiratory symptoms in the population remains controversial. The aim was to study the association between e-cigarette use and, changes in smoking status and changes in respiratory

When Speaker Recognition Meets Noisy Labels: Optimizations for Front-ends and Back-ends

open access: yes, 2021
A typical speaker recognition system often involves two modules: a feature extractor front-end and a speaker identity back-end. Despite the superior performance that deep neural networks have achieved for the front-end, their success benefits from the ...

Speech Emotion Recognition Using 3D Convolutions and Attention-Based Sliding Recurrent Networks With Auditory Front-Ends [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Emotion information from speech can effectively help robots understand speaker’s intentions in natural human-robot interaction. The human auditory system can easily track temporal dynamics of emotion by perceiving the intensity and fundamental frequency ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

puzzlef/pagerank-inequality-handle-dead-ends: Comparison of inequality in ranks of vertices with different dead end handling strategies

open access: yes, 2022
Comparison of inequality in ranks of vertices with different dead-end handling strategies. This experiment was for comparing the Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient between: Find PageRank by teleporting to a random vertex from every dead-end (default ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Ends of groups : a computational approach [PDF]

open access: yes
We develop ways in which we can find the number of ends of automatic groups and groups with solvable word problem. In chapter 1, we provide an introduction to ends, splittings, and computa- tion in groups. We also remark that the `JSJ problem'

Review: love and war in All’s Well That Ends Well [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
[Extract] Love is a battlefield. While Pat Benatar might have made this line her own in the 1980s, Shakespeare and his contemporaries were also familiar with the trope. Analogies between wooing and hunting were rife in early modern sonnets and plays.
