Evolution of Host Defense against Multiple Enemy Populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Natural and managed populations are embedded within complex ecological communities, where they face multiple enemies. Experimental studies have shown that the evolution of host defense mechanisms to a focal enemy is impacted by the surrounding enemy ...

The “Magic” of Conflict: How Participatory Governance Can Enable Transformative Climate Adaptation

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In many cases, addressing climate risks requires transformative climate adaptation (TCA) that goes beyond small adjustments to existing systems. While scholars increasingly argue that participatory governance is key and should embrace conflict rather than push for consensus to enable TCA, this assumption remains underexplored.

Neural Network–Assisted Metasurface Retroreflector With Wide‐Angle Adaptivity

open access: yesElectron, EarlyView.
This work proposes a wide‐angle, multi‐polarization, self‐sensing, and self‐adaptive intelligent metasurface retroreflector, with a planar profile and ultrathin thickness. By integrating a pre‐trained artificial neural network (ANN), the metasurface retroreflector can recognize the incident angle and promptly adapt to changes in the incoming wave.

Brothers in Arms - An Experiment on the Alliance Puzzle [PDF]

open access: yes
Our experimental analysis of alliances in conflicts leads to three main findings. First, even in the absence of repeated interaction, direct contact or communication, free-riding among alliance members is far less pronounced than what would be expected ...

De «bandidos» e «infidentes»

open access: yesMélanges de la Casa de Velázquez, 2018
The article deals with the subject of banditry in Cuba during the first half of the 19th century, focusing first on the semantic and coercive treatment of the subject by the island’s executive and Permanent Military Commission (1825-1856) and thence ...

Effects of Concentrations of Water‐Based MgO Nanofluid on Heat Transfer Performance in Shell‐and‐Tube Heat Exchanger

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This figure shows the variation of the total heat transfer coefficient of a shell and tube heat exchanger with different concentrations of water‐based MgO nanofluids at different inlet flow rates. The results indicate that the total heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing flow velocity, and at different volume fraction settings, the ...

Collaborative Optimization of Electromagnetic Interference Shielding, Adaptive Multi‐Color, and Thermal Camouflage of Basalt Fibers by Temperature‐Induced Gradient Structure Control

open access: yesExploration, EarlyView.
Polychromatic BFs with exceptional EMI and thermal shielding were fabricated based on a “plasma activation‐ALD bridging‐chemical plating‐post annealing treatments” gradient functionalization strategy. As prepared, basalt fiber/fabric demonstrates outstanding EMI SE of 53.47 dB and thermal infrared camouflage effect.

Engineered extracellular vesicles for precision renal therapy: Bioengineering strategies and clinical translation

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) offer a versatile platform for kidney‐targeted therapy. This review summarizes bioengineering strategies, including cargo loading, surface modification, biomimetic fabrication, and biomaterial integration. We highlight translational challenges and propose future solutions to accelerate the clinical application of
