Feasibility Study of Freeze Recovery Options in Parabolic Trough Collector Plants Working with Molten Salt as Heat Transfer Fluid

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Parabolic trough collector (PTC) technology is currently the most mature solar technology, which has led to the accumulation of relevant operational experience. The overall performance and efficiency of these plants depends on several components, and the

Testing VIPV Curved Modules: Methods and Challenges

open access: yesProgress in Photovoltaics: Research and Applications, EarlyView.
This work presents procedures and equipment for characterizing curved vehicle‐integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) modules through STC I–V curve and relative angular response (RAR) measurements. Outdoor measurements are compared with indoor measurements obtained using a collimated‐light solar simulator, showing excellent agreement for STC I–V curves.

Robotics‐assisted acoustic surveys could deliver reliable, landscape‐level biodiversity insights

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Deploying and maintaining sensors is often a major bottleneck in collecting rapid biodiversity data. We tested whether autonomous hopping drones equipped with acoustic recorders could collect reliable biodiversity data in Costa Rica. Using 26,000+ hours of existing audio from 341 sites, with machine learning detections of 19 bird species and spider ...

Limiting Efficiencies of Novel Solar Cell Concepts in Space

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2017
In this work we study the limiting efficiency in space environmental conditions of three novel solar cell concepts (hot carrier solar cells, multiple exciton generation solar cells and intermediate band solar cells) and how this limiting efficiency is ...

Boosting Charge Carrier Mobilities in Upgraded Metallurgical Grade Silicon by Phosphorous Diffusion Gettering

open access: yesAdvanced Energy & Sustainability Research, 2022
Herein, it is demonstrated how the carrier mobility and carrier lifetime of upgraded‐metallurgical grade silicon (UMG‐Si), a feedstock alternative to electronic‐grade, high‐purity polysilicon dominating photovoltaic technology, can be largely improved ...

Business Model and Sustainable Development Goals for an Innovative Agricultural Waste Management: Distributed Biogas Production

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Technological progress and population growth have increased global pork demand; leading to a rise of methane emission from pig farming, a key contributor to climate change. Anaerobic digestion offers a sustainable solution by converting manure into biogas.

Exploring the exploration: implications of leaving or remaining at the natal site during the early stages of independence in a partially migratory bird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Despite being an important fraction of any animal population, juveniles are a severely understudied group. Juveniles often need to learn an array of skills that allow them to survive independently and do so while undertaking decisions that may impact their fitness, recruitment and survival, having therefore relevant demographic implications.

Deciphering the complex life cycle and partial migration of an ecological engineer and critical Neotropical fishery species, Prochilodus costatus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding complex migration patterns, including drivers of partial migration and habitat use, is challenging but essential for conservation, as it determines a species' adaptative capacity in the face of environmental change and anthropogenic threats.
