Estimation of spatiotemporal trends in bat abundance from mortality data collected at wind turbines. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol, 2021
Abstract Renewable energy sources, such as wind energy, are essential tools for reducing the causes of climate change, but wind turbines can pose a collision risk for bats. To date, the population‐level effects of wind‐related mortality have been estimated for only 1 bat species. To estimate temporal trends in bat abundance, we considered wind turbines

Near-term ecological forecasting for dynamic aeroconservation of migratory birds. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol, 2021
Abstract Near‐term ecological forecasting has the potential to mitigate negative impacts of human modifications on wildlife by directing efficient action through relevant and timely predictions. We used the U.S. avian migration system to highlight ecological forecasting applications for aeroconservation.

Evaluating drivers of recent large whale strandings on the East Coast of the United States. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Anthropogenic stressors threaten large whales globally. Effective management requires an understanding of where, when, and why threats are occurring. Strandings data provide key information on geographic hotspots of risk and the relative importance of various threats.

A cluster analysis of the global wind power industry: Insights for renewable energy business stakeholders and environmental policy decision makers

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 2755-2766, September 2023., 2023
Abstract In light of an ongoing climate change and an increasing fragility of fossil energy supply due to global political tensions, the adoption of renewable energy sources is of utmost importance for economic and social prosperity. This study targets to endeavor major value chain configurations within the global wind power industry network based on a

Hotspots in the grid: Avian sensitivity and vulnerability to collision risk from energy infrastructure interactions in Europe and North Africa

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 6, Page 1496-1512, June 2022., 2022
We identify the areas of Europe and North Africa that are most sensitive for the specific populations of birds for which sufficient GPS tracking data at high spatial resolution were available. We also map vulnerability hotspots where mitigation at existing EI should be prioritised to reduce collision risks.

Relative energy production determines effect of repowering on wildlife mortality at wind energy facilities

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 58, Issue 6, Page 1284-1290, June 2021., 2021
In the context of repowering a wind facility, our results suggest that the relative amount of energy produced, rather than simply the size, spacing or nameplate capacity of the replacement turbines, determines the relative rate of mortality prior to and after repowering.
