Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Frequency-independent smartphone peripherals energy consumption estimation

open access: yesCybernetics and Physics, 2023
The power consumption of mobile devices is a hot topic these days, and it is important to address it when developing applications. One of the most popular ways to measure it is accessing internal sensors using Android Debug Bridge (ADB). We discovered that measurement frequency may skew the power readings.

Estimating the energy consumption of model-view-controller applications

open access: yesThe Journal of Supercomputing, 2023
AbstractFor information and communication technology to reach its goal of zero emissions in 2050, power consumption must be reduced, including the energy consumed by software. To develop sustainability-aware software, green metrics have been implemented to estimate the energy consumed by the execution of an application.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
