The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Energy conversion via metal nanolayers [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2019
Significance This work reports kinetic:electrical energy transduction using nanolayers formed in a single step from Earth-abundant elements. The method utilizes large-area physical vapor deposition onto rigid or flexible substrates that can be readily scaled to arbitrarily large areas.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Rapid mapping of alloy surface phase diagrams via Bayesian evolutionary multitasking

open access: yesnpj Computational Materials, 2023
Surface phase diagrams (SPDs) are essential for understanding the dependence of surface chemistry on reaction condition. For multi-component systems such as metal alloys, the derivation of such diagrams often relies on separate first-principles global ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Nonlinear Dynamic Characteristics of Multidisk Rod Fastening Rotor with Axial Unbalance Mass Distribution

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2022
During long-term operation, the blades of rod fastening rotor are very prone to fault and may cause uneven axial mass distribution. The dynamic characteristics of a multidisk rod fastening rotor with axial unbalance mass distribution are studied.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Bifacial Thermophotovoltaic Energy Conversion

open access: yesACS Photonics, 2023
Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion efficiency has recently surpassed 30%. The key behind such high efficiency is the inclusion of a highly efficient mirror in the rear of the TPV cell that turns back to the thermal emitter the outband energy photons.
