Resonant Enhancement of Turbulent Energy Dissipation [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2010
We periodically modulate a turbulent wind-tunnel flow with an active grid. We find a resonant enhancement of the mean turbulent dissipation rate at a modulation frequency which equals the large-eddy turnover rate. Thus, we find the best frequency to inject energy into a turbulent flow. The resonant response is characterized by the emergence of vortical

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

ENERGY DISSIPATION CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-LINEAR NORMAL VIBRATION CONTACT INTERFACE

open access: yesJixie qiangdu, 2022
The energy dissipation characteristics of the non-linear normal vibration contact system of the interface have important theoretical and engineering significance for describing the dynamic mechanism of the interface.Based on Hertz contact theory, the ...

Dissipation mechanisms identification of soft hollow particle-dampers in honeycomb structures for micro-vibrations environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Particle dampers are enclosures partially filled with metallic or glass small spheres, attached to the vibrating structure. This paper deals with replacing hard classical particles by soft hollow ones to maximize damping and mass ratio. Hence, one aspect

Finite-Element Analysis on Energy Dissipation and Sealability of Premium Connections under Dynamic Loads

open access: yes, 2023
In the process of high flow rate fracture and high gas production, the sealing performance of the premium connection decreases due to the dynamic load and vibration of downhole tubing strings, which may cause accidents.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Theoretical Analysis Model of a New Post-Tensioned, Unbonded, Prestressed Beam–Column Connection

open access: yesBuildings
To investigate the mechanical properties of a new post-tensioned, unbonded, prestressed beam–column connection—including its hysteresis behavior and energy dissipation capacity—a theoretical analysis was conducted.

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Energy Dissipation in Stepped Spillways with Different Horizontal Face Angles

open access: yes, 2019
Energy dissipation is one of the most important factors in choosing stepped spillways. However, very few studies have investigated energy dissipation with different horizontal face angles.
