This chapter is based on empirical evidence gathered from 44 personal interviews (22 in the oil and gas industry, 13 in the utility sector and nine with external stakeholders), and 205 completed mail, fax and on-line questionnaires (30 completed by sustainability officers and 175 by general managers, that is non-experts on sustainability).

Trends in Industrial Use of Energy
Science, 1984Industry's use of energy, accounting for approximately 40 percent of U.S. consumption, changed significantly after 1973. In 1982 industry consumed one-third less energy than trends established before 1973 would have predicted. Part of this reduction resulted from improvements in the efficiency of industrial process technologies.
