GapLoss: a loss function for semantic segmentation of roads in remote sensing images

open access: yes, 2022
openAttualmente l’analisi della continuità stradale nelle immagini satellitari è una sfida complessa dovuta alla difficoltà nell’individuare il vettore direzionale dei tratti stradali, soprattutto quando la vista satellitare delle strade è ostruita ...

The BREAK study protocol: Effects of intermittent energy restriction on adaptive thermogenesis during weight loss and its maintenance.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2023
BackgroundAdaptive thermogenesis, defined as the decrease in the energy expenditure components beyond what can be predicted by changes in body mass stores, has been studied as a possible barrier to weight loss and weight maintenance.

Learning-Based Safe Control for Robot and Autonomous Vehicle Using Efficient Safety Certificate

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2023
Energy-function-based safety certificates can provide demonstrable safety for complex automatic control systems used in safety control tasks. However, recent studies on learning-based energy function synthesis have only focused on feasibility, which can ...

Comparative Evaluation of Hemodiafiltration, Hemoperfusion, and Standard Hemodialysis on Efficacy, Inflammatory Control, Dialysis Adequacy, and Safety in End‐Stage Renal Disease: A Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic micro‐inflammation in patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant driver of cardiovascular complications and diminished quality of life. While standard hemodialysis (SHD) effectively manages small‐molecule clearance, its ability to remove medium‐to‐large uremic toxins—the primary catalysts of systemic ...

Multi-Objective Optimal Charging Method for Lithium-Ion Batteries

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
In order to optimize the charging of lithium-ion batteries, a multi-stage charging method that considers the charging time and energy loss as optimization targets has been proposed in this paper.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

A review of the Energy Productivity Center's Least-Cost Energy Strategy study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
The Mellon Institute's Energy Productivity Center (EPC) has recently completed a study asking the question, "How would the nation have provided energy services in 1978 if its capital stock had een reconfigured to be optimal for actual 1978 energy prices?"
