Potential of Clay-Based Geomaterials for Passive Treatment of Brackish and Saline Waters [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
The increasing salinity and water scarcity of water resources are major problems in semi-arid or arid regions. This study examines the possibilities of a hybrid geomaterial based on clay to treat passively water bodies that are brackish or saline made ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Cost optimization for the 100% renewable electricity scenario for the Java-Bali grid

open access: yesInternational Journal of Renewable Energy Development, 2018
A 100% renewable electricity supply is no insurmountable technical problem anymore after the respective technologies to harvest the energy from multiple renewable energy sources have been developed and have reached a high level of maturity. A problem may

An MILP Model for Distributed Energy System Optimization

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2013
Investigations regarding means to achieve savings in primary energy use and to decrease anthropogenic CO2 emissions have shown that improved energy efficiency has potential to offer a significant contribution to this cause. Considering energy networks and systems, improvements can be achieved by optimizing the structure of the energy chains and ...

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Energy and Uncertainty: Models and Algorithms for Complex Energy Systems

open access: yesAI Magazine, 2014
The problem of controlling energy systems (generation, transmission, storage, investment) introduces a number of optimization problems that need to be solved in the presence of different types of uncertainty. I highlight several of these applications, using a simple energy storage problem as a case application. Using this setting, I describe a modeling

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...
