Permission to bite: White‐footed mice show no increased grooming response to tick infestation

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 326, Issue 2, Page 140-147, June 2025.
White‐footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) are one of the most frequently studied hosts of blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis); however, interactions between white‐footed mice and ticks are not easily observed. This study aimed to quantify activity patterns in white‐footed mice and to assess their behavioral responses to parasitism by blacklegged ticks ...

HLA‐DR–Expressing Fibroblast‐Like Synoviocytes Are Inducible Antigen Presenting Cells That Present Autoantigens in Lyme Arthritis

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 6, Issue 10, Page 678-689, October 2024.
Objective HLA‐DR–expressing fibroblast‐like synoviocytes (FLS) are a prominent cell type in synovial tissue in chronic inflammatory forms of arthritis. FLS‐derived extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, including fibronectin‐1 (FN1), contain immunogenic CD4+ T cell epitopes in patients with postinfectious Lyme arthritis (LA).

Bright New Resources for Syphilis Research: Genetically Encoded Fluorescent Tags for Treponema pallidum and Sf1Ep Cells

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 122, Issue 4, Page 455-464, October 2024.
By employing genetic engineering, Treponema pallidum was modified to express GFP, and Sf1Ep cells to express mCherry on the cytoplasmic membrane and BFP in the nucleus. These new resources for syphilis research will facilitate experimental designs to better define the complex interplay between T. pallidum and the host during infection.

Cascading effects of mammal host community composition on tick vector occurrence at the urban human–wildlife interface

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2024.
Abstract Habitat fragmentation and host community composition are implicated as key drivers of changing tick populations and tick‐borne pathogen dynamics, altering infection risk through coupled socioecological pathways that mediate interactions between tick vectors, vertebrate hosts, and humans.

Genome resequencing reveals population divergence and local adaptation of blacklegged ticks in the United States

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 15, August 2024.
Abstract Tick vectors and tick‐borne disease are increasingly impacting human populations globally. An important challenge is to understand tick movement patterns, as this information can be used to improve management and predictive modelling of tick population dynamics.
