Magnitude and variability of blood pressure and renal vascular conductance responses to postural changes, exercise, and cold in black adults: A pilot study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9, May 2026.
Abstract We developed a noninvasive approach to measure vascular responses to sympathetic stimuli. We hypothesized that standing, handgrip exercise, or cold exposure would raise blood pressure (BP) and lower renal vascular conductance (RVC). BP was recorded continuously and renal arterial velocity was measured using renal Doppler ultrasound.

Development of a Personalized Visualization and Analysis Tool to Improve Clinical Care in Complex Multisystem Diseases With Application to Scleroderma

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Volume 78, Issue 2, Page 197-207, February 2026.
Objective In complex diseases, it is challenging to assess a patient's disease state, trajectory, treatment exposures, and risk of multiple outcomes simultaneously, efficiently, and at the point of care. Methods We developed an interactive patient‐level data visualization and analysis tool (VAT) that automates illustration of the trajectory of a ...

Probabilistic Clustering Using Multivariate Growth Mixture Model in Clinical Settings—A Scleroderma Example

open access: yesStatistics in Medicine, Volume 45, Issue 3-5, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis; SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease known for wide heterogeneity in patients' disease progression in multiple organ systems. Our goal is to guide clinical care by real‐time classification of patients into clinically interpretable subpopulations based on their baseline characteristics and the ...

Associations Between Changes in Pain Sensitization and Disease Activity Following Disease‐Modifying Antirheumatic Drug Therapy in Established Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Volume 77, Issue 12, Page 1682-1688, December 2025.
Objective Abnormalities in pain regulatory mechanisms are common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated whether pain sensitization changes after treatment with a disease‐modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) and explored associations between changes in pain sensitization and disease activity.

Hand Swelling and Other Non–Raynaud Phenomenon Symptoms as the Initial Presentation of Systemic Sclerosis: Prevalence and Clinical Associations in Two US Cohorts

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Volume 77, Issue 11, Page 1585-1595, November 2025.
Objective Raynaud phenomenon (RP) is often the initial clinical manifestation of systemic sclerosis (SSc), but some patients develop other manifestations first. To help elucidate the diversity of SSc presentation in its early stages, we describe the initial clinical manifestations and antinuclear antibody (ANA) profiles of patients in two early SSc ...
