The Effect of Refined Separation on the Properties of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Materials

open access: yesBuildings
Refined separation not only controls the variability of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), but also improves the mixing ratio of RAP and the quality of recycled asphalt mixtures.

SEC Enforcement Heuristics: An Empirical Inquiry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This Article examines the overlap between SEC securities enforcement actions and private securities fraud class actions. We begin with an overview of data concerning all SEC enforcement actions from 1997 to 2002.

Tunable and Persistent Macroscopic Polarization in Nominally Centrosymmetric Defective Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces an approach to defect‐mediated symmetry breaking and built‐in polarization in nominally centrosymmetric defective oxides, Gd‐doped CeO2‐δ films, by controlling macroscopic charge asymmetry. Electric field‐driven asymmetric redistribution of oxygen vacancies induces a switchable, stable polarization, leading to a notable, persistent

Enforcement and over-compliance [PDF]

open access: yes
Economists generally view environmental enforcement as a tool to secure compliance with regulations. This paper demonstrates that credible enforcement significantly increases statutory over-compliance with regulations as well.

Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights: A Methodology for Understanding the Enforcement Problem in China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
[Excerpt] “Intellectual property rights are neither protected nor enforced in strict uniformity throughout the world. However, it can be said that in most developed countries, intellectual property is preciously guarded, as evidenced by a plethora of ...

Colossal Cryogenic Electro‐Optic Response Through Metastability in Strained BaTiO3 Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Utilizing the thermodynamic theory of optical properties, a colossal cryogenic electro‐optic response in BaTiO3 thin films is designed and demonstrated by stabilizing a low symmetry metastable monoclinic phase via epitaxial strain tuning with an electro‐optic response reaching ≈2516 pm V−1 at 5 K. This approach represents a new paradigm for engineering

Remorphable Architectures: Reprogramming Global Bistability through Locally Bistable Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Local bistable reconfiguration in mechanical metamaterials is leveraged in globally bistable architectures to enable in situ reprogrammable transition pathways through state flip of individual building blocks. The local‐to‐global correspondence of instabilities empowers soft robotic systems with on‐demand morphing traits, as well as aerospace ...

Why Is Law Enforcement Decentralized? [PDF]

open access: yes
Law enforcement is decentralized. It is so despite documented interjurisdictional externalities which would justify its centralization. To explain this fact, we construct a political economy model of law enforcement.

Mechanochemical Nitrous Oxide Decomposition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of 310. A novel mechanochemical strategy is presented for decomposing N2O into harmless nitrogen and oxygen, achieving a rapid decomposition rate of 1761.3 mL h−1 and nearly complete N2O conversion of 99.98% at 42 °C.

Foundations of empathy and resilience: Integrating trauma-informed policing from recruit training onward

open access: yesJournal of Community Safety and Well-Being
In this article, the authors explore the early integration of trauma-informed policing into the training of police recruits in Tasmania since 2023. Trauma-informed policing is an approach that recognizes the psychological, emotional, and physical impact
