The Biomedical Engineer and the Doctor [PDF]

open access: yesAnaesthesia and Intensive Care, 1975
The appearance of engineers with special training in biology has occurred only in the past fifteen years, and the spectacular contributions they can make to patient care have been confined mainly to the years since solid-state electronic circuitry became available.

Dedicated Exposure Control for Remote Photoplethysmography

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
This paper aims to show that control of exposure time during video capture will improve the accuracy of remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). We propose a purpose specific exposure control algorithm for use in heart rate estimation via rPPG applicable for ...

G-quartet driven adaptive hydrogels that integrate constitutional dynamics for antibacterial action and tissue repair

open access: yesiScience
Summary: We report a nucleic acid inspired constitutional dynamic hydrogel (G4TZ) self-assembled from guanosine, a phenylboronic acid, and a thiazole peptide through dynamic covalent linkages formed by boronate ester and imine bonds, together with ...

Static structural analysis of different stem designs used in total hip arthroplasty using finite element method

open access: yesHeliyon, 2019
Background: The Hip joint is the primary joint which gives stability to the human body. The wear and tear associated with age and other factors, require these joints to be replaced by implants using hip arthroplasty surgeries. Cobalt chromium alloy (CoCr)

Auxetic Structures for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds and Biomedical Devices

open access: yesMaterials, 2021
An auxetic structure utilizing a negative Poisson’s ratio, which can expand transversally when axially expanded under tensional force, has not yet been studied in the tissue engineering and biomedical area. However, the recent advent of new technologies,

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
