Engineering Structures, 2019
Abstract In the framework of Structural Health Monitoring, vibration-based methods are commonly used to assess the condition of a structural system, being the dynamic properties sensitive to damage-induced changes. Within this context, negative selection, a bio-inspired classification algorithm, can be exploited to distinguish anomalous from normal ...

SOME PROBLEMS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING ANALYSIS AND THE THEORY OF (GENERALIZED) GEOMETRIC PROGRAMMING
Engineering Optimization, 1976Abstract We consider problems of analysis in three major areas of Civil Engineering, namely: i) Hydraulic Network analysis, specifically, the determination of flow rates and junction pressures in hydraulic networks, when inlet and outlet flow rates or inlet and outlet pressure heads are known.

Leadership and Management in Engineering, 2011
Globalization has led to new forms of teams that are diverse in age, education, culture, ethnicity, language, and often geographic location. Like teams in business, consulting, and military operations, which have become multicultural, cross-generational, and multidisciplinary to address the new and emerging challenges of operating in a globalized world,

Educating next-generation civil engineers about smart structures technology
SPIE Proceedings, 2005The implementation of smart structures technology in the design, construction and maintenance of civil and mechanical systems have been shown beneficial to the performance enhancement, operating efficiency and reliability of structural systems. However, most of today's engineering students are unaware of the remarkable properties of smart sensors and ...

Computational generation of free-form shells in architectural design and civil engineering
Automation in Construction, 2010Abstract This study develops a computational model of free-form shell generation in the design of roof structures that rely on the optimized behavior of the membrane theory of thin shells. For architects and engineers, the model offers a low cost, fast, and relatively easy design solution.

The development of generic competences in Malaysian civil engineering programmes: a case study
2013This study focuses on generic competences that have been considered to be lacking in graduates from Malaysian polytechnics specifically their problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills, and team building. The argument concerning generic competences has focused upon teachers' pedagogical approaches and their relation to students' learning.
