Protecting and Enhancing American Sovereignty
2023Abstract This chapter describes how the UNCLOS Convention protects and expands American sovereignty. Thus, the Convention creates a new area of United States sovereign rights over natural resources of the seafloor and water column to 200 nautical miles off America’s coasts, and it massively expands the legal continental shelf of the ...

Topologically protected sound enhancement
Applied Physics LettersThe pursuit of robust and enhanced acoustic sensing has garnered significant attention across multiple fields of acoustic engineering. Here, we propose a feasible approach to realizing sound energy enhancement along the interface of two topologically distinct materials in an acoustic topological waveguide (ATW) with a gradient gap width.

International Journal of Critical Infrastructures, 2011
Argonne National Laboratory in partnership with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has developed a methodology to systematically evaluate the protection posture and vulnerability of critical infrastructure and key resources (CIKR). This vulnerability methodology is part of a larger effort by DHS called the Enhanced Critical Infrastructure ...

Reflex-mediated enhancement of airway protective mechanisms
The American Journal of Medicine, 2000The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and lower esophageal sphincter (LES) comprise the basal mechanisms against entry of gastric content into the aerodigestive tract and the airway. There are, however, other mechanisms referred to here as "response mechanisms" that become activated after certain stimulation, such as distention of the esophagus or ...

Diversity to enhance autonomic computing self-protection
First International Conference on Availability, Reliability and Security (ARES'06), 2006Self-protection is an attribute of autonomic computing systems, reflecting the requirement to proactively defend against attackers, and automatically detect and recover from attacks. As demonstrated by increasing numbers of Internet worms, a single previously unknown vulnerability can cause an entire infrastructure to crumble, due to software and ...

Out-of-step protection enhancements
Eighth IEE International Conference on Developments in Power System Protection, 2004Power systems are subjected to a wide range of small or larger disturbances during operating conditions and they are designed to survive disturbances caused by faults, loss of a large generator, or line switching. The power system typically adjusts to these disturbances and continues to operate satisfactorily and within the desired bounds of voltage ...

Enhancing attributional style as a protective factor in suicide
Journal of Affective Disorders, 2012We applied Needles and Abramson (1990) recovery model of cognitive vulnerability to the suicide. Previous research has found that individuals who make global and stable attributions to positive events (an enhancing attributional style) are more resilient to depression and recover faster if they do become depressed.
