Crustal Characteristics in the Subduction Zone of Mexico: Implication of the Tectonostratigraphic Terranes on Slab Tearing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
During the past years, significant work has been done for studying the crustal anisotropy and state of stress of the Mexican subduction zone. At the same time, there is new evidence of the geometry of the subducted slab proposing subduction tearing. Here,

Vulnerability of marine megafauna to global at‐sea anthropogenic threats

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened ...

Status of the Pacific Mackerel resource during 1996 management recommendations for the fishery [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The California fishery for Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) has declined precipitously since 1990. Statewide landings during 1995 continued the downward trend, and totaled only 9,185 short tons.

Characterizing morphology of Egregia menziesii (Laminariales) in California over 2 centuries using historical and contemporary herbarium specimens

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 82-95, February 2026.
Abstract The canopy‐forming feather boa kelp Egregia menziesii exhibits remarkable morphological variability across its geographic range. Regional morphotypes of Egregia were once considered separate species, but they were not determined to be genetically distinct; instead, their morphology was thought to reflect local physical or environmental ...

Variation in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) catches related to El Niño-Southern Oscillation events at the entrance to the Gulf of California [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Fishery catch data on yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) were examined to study the effects of El Niño events between 1990 and 1999 for an area in the northeastern tropical Pacific (18−24°N, 112−104°W).

Size Effects of TiO2 Nanoparticles as Supports for W‐ and NiW‐Catalysts for Selective 3‐Methylthiophene Desulfurization

open access: yesChemCatChem, Volume 18, Issue 1, 15 January 2026.
Rounded TiO2 nanoparticles we sucesfully synthesized with modulated sizes from 109 to 22 nm. We observed the WS2 and NiWS active phases forming parallel slabs to the surface. The presence of Ni helped W to be better dispersed, especially on the smallest nanoparticles, which resulted in the highest activity detected among the series.

Light-induced removal of 180° ferroelectric domains in Rh:BaTiO3

open access: yes, 2000
We show that optically-induced photorefractive space-charge fields can remove 180° ferroelectric domains in rhodium-doped barium titanate.

Demography and dynamics of giant kelp cohorts across four decades: Lessons for conservation and resilience planning

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 36, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Kelp forests throughout many temperate zones are in decline due to various human stressors, chiefly marine warming. Conservation measures including restoration are presently of great interest and focus on both historical and novel methodologies.

One Shared Region and Two Different Change Patterns: Land Use Change in the Binational Californian Mediterranean Region

open access: yesLand, 2015
The Californian Floristic Province, ranging from Northern California, USA, to the northwestern portion of the state of Baja California, Mexico, is a region of great biological richness that has a high risk of loss of species due to the effect of human ...
