Occurrence and genotypic characteristics of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in pigs with diarrhea

Parasitology Research, 2007
There is limited information available on the association between Enterocytozoon bieneusi and diseases in animals or on the characteristics of the strains involved. This study examined the occurrence of E. bieneusi in piglets with and without diarrhea to determine its involvement.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi (Microspora): prevalence and pathogenicity in AIDS patients

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1990
Microsporidia are unicellular organisms, which lack mitochondria. They have prokaryotic-like ribosomes and characteristic spores containing an extrusible polar tube which serves as a passage for inoculation of the infectious agent (sporoplasm) into host cells.

Evidence for the existence of genetically distinct strains of Enterocytozoon bieneusi

Parasitology Research, 1997
Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most frequently found microsporidium in human infections. In all, 3 distinct genotypes were detected in 12 stool samples from 8 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A total of 9 polymorphic sites were found in the 243-bp-long internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the rDNA gene, whereas none was found in

Enterocytozoon bieneusi multiorgan microsporidiosis in a HIV-infected patient

Journal of Infection, 1998
Multiorgan microsporidiosis due to Enterocytozoon bieneusi was diagnosed in an HIV-infected patient. The parasite was found and identified as E. bieneusi by transmission electron microscopy in stools, duodenal biopsy, nasal discharge and sputum. No clinical improvement or parasite eradication was obtained after albendazole therapy, but the patient ...

Search for Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in wild monkeys in Cameroon

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2002
Faecal samples collected from 42 wild monkeys in Cameroon were examined for microsporidia by light microscopy (using Weber trichrome and Uvitex 2B stains) and by PCR (using Enterocytozoon bieneusi specific primers). None of the 42 samples was positive, suggesting that wild monkeys do not represent a major reservoir for microsporidia in Central Africa.

Zoonotic Enterocytozoon bieneusi genotypes found in brazilian sheep

Research in Veterinary Science, 2016
The presence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in sheep has been reported in only three countries worldwide. The present study has found E. bieneusi in Brazilian sheep for the first time; in 24/125 (19.2%) fecal samples by PCR and on 8/10 (80%) farms from three diverse locations.

Host Specificity of Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Public Health Implications

Trends in Parasitology, 2019
Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common cause of human microsporidiosis and it also infects a wide range of mammals and birds worldwide. The role of animals in the transmission of this parasite to humans and its public health importance remain poorly elucidated. This review summarizes all E.

Prevalence and molecular characteristics of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in cattle in Korea

Parasitology Research, 2007
Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common microsporidium associated with AIDS patients. Moreover, its detection in increasing numbers of immunocompetent patients has made it an emerging pathogen. This organism was also identified in a wide range of animals, and the zoonotic potential of human infections is of particular interest.
