Tiny Patch, Big Value: A Small Dry Forest Patch Supports Wildlife Conservation in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
This study highlights the biodiversity value of the Murren Reserve, a small tropical dry forest patch in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Using camera traps and opportunistic observations, researchers documented 32 wildlife species, including federally endangered species like the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and puma (Puma concolor), as well as 73 plant species.

The Lost Large Mammals of Arabia

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim If successful, plans to restore the vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula (AP) as announced by the Middle East and Saudi Green Initiatives will see the greatest increase in vegetation cover since the beginning of the Holocene Humid Phase (HHP), roughly 9–10,000 years ago.

An integrative approach to silvopastoral system design: perspectives, potentials and principles

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 68, Issue 2, Page 218-258, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Silvopastoral systems have complex impacts on a diverse range of outcomes, making it essential to design these systems using an integrative approach to maximise positive impacts to farms. This paper comprises firstly a systematic review of global silvopastoral processes, and secondly stakeholder‐driven synthesis of key opportunities and ...

Nitrogen fixation and fertilization have similar effects on biomass allocation in nitrogen‐fixing plants

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
It has long been known that plants adjust allocation to different tissues based on supply of soil nitrogen, but the degree to which nitrogen supplied by symbiotic nitrogen‐fixing bacteria has similar effects on allocation is less well known. Using an experiment with 15 plant species with and without access to symbiotic nitrogen‐fixing bacteria, grown ...

Pinewood preserved with Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Jacq) Griseb. heartwood aqueous extract

open access: yesRevista Árvore
Enterolobium cyclocarpum heartwood is prized for furniture making because of its natural durability. In this process, up to 50% of the heartwood is discarded in the sawmill. Which contains extractives that can be used to emulate the natural durability and give protection to soft or rapidly deteriorating ...

Evolutionary history and root trait coordination predict nutrient strategy in tropical legume trees

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 243, Issue 5, Page 1711-1723, September 2024.
Summary Plants express diverse nutrient use and acquisition traits, but it is unclear how trait combinations at the species level are constrained by phylogeny, trait coordination, or trade‐offs in resource investment. One trait – nitrogen (N) fixation – is assumed to correlate with other traits and used to define plant functional groups, despite ...
