Sliding block entropy coding of images

International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2003
The authors compare various options for combining linear prediction with vector quantization for purposes of image coding. A previously developed algorithm called sliding block predictive vector quantization (SBPVQ) is extended with multiple-level quantizers (i.e. n>2), and is compared to vector-predictive quantization (VPQ).

Indexing and entropy coding of lattice codevectors

2001 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing. Proceedings (Cat. No.01CH37221), 2002
We present two methods of entropy coding for the lattice codevectors. We compare our entropy coding methods with one method previously presented in the literature from the point of view of rate-distortion as well as of the computation complexity and memory requirements.

Hardware for Entropy Coding

1995
The entropy coder is the last stage in the encoding pipeline of JPEG, H.261, and MPEG. Unlike transform-based coding, where compression is lossy, entropy coding is lossless. The entropy coder consists of two main data compression/decompression units: a run-length coder (RLC) and a variable-length coder (VLC).

Differential pulse-code modulation (PCM) with entropy coding

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1976
Summary: 4) \(\Delta_\sigma h(\alpha)\) is expanded in terms of \(\Delta_\sigma h(\beta)\) as follows: \[ \Delta_\sigma h(\alpha) = \sum_{\gamma\le\sigma} \Delta h((\alpha\wedge\bar\sigma)\vee \gamma)\quad (\bar\sigma: \text{ complement of }\sigma). \] 5) There exists a probability distribution under which the values of all the elements of \(\underline

A model for entropy coding in matching pursuit

Proceedings 1998 International Conference on Image Processing. ICIP98 (Cat. No.98CB36269), 2002
Matching pursuit is a powerful and flexible optimisation technique that has found applications in different areas, including image and video compression. This paper proposes an underlying probabilistic model for the entropy coding of the parameters generated by the matching pursuit algorithm in the context of image coding. It also distinguishes between
